Bob, All my price lists are at home and I am in the office.... Going by memory, M3 body pricing in the US used to be between US$250.00 to US$450.00, depending on whether the purchase took place in 1954, during the mid-60's or anywhere in-between. doubice Posted November 30, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 30, 2008 Pricing of a Leica M3 body, out of Ernst Leitz Inc, USA Catalogues: 1957: US$297.00 1960: US$270.00 1962: US$297.00 1966: US$288.00 1968, for comparison: M2 body US$249.00 M3 body US$288.00 M4 body chrome US$288.00 M4 body black US$324.00 Now, I recall that when I arrived in Canada in 1968, a VW Beetle cost about $1,895.00 or, about the equivalent of 6.5 M4’s. Six and a half M8’s will buy a lot more than ‘just’ a VW Beetle today……… Times have changed……. Best, Jan

Guest Ron (Netherlands) Posted November 30, 2008 Share #11 Posted November 30, 2008 To get a feeling of its value in the past, by multiplying the below values with its original price, you can rougly estimate what value that camera would have had in terms of current money. 1950 7,53x 1955 6,5x 1960 5,58x 1966 4,5x

gyoung Posted December 1, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 1, 2008 it’s amazing how expensive they were back then and still managed to sell over 220,000 units. You have got to remember that all cameras were relatively expensive in those days, before mass automated production, and 'modern' plastic type materials were used. I started work in a camera shop in 1960, as far as I remember a Nikon F cost much the same as an M3. Even a Pentax S3 cost about 2/3 those prices, compare that with the difference between an M7 and an FM2, which when last available cost about 1/4 the price in the UK.
