DPReview report that Panasonic is releasing new FW to the LX3 on Dec 15. At least we now know the camera's FW can be upgraded. This should mean that the D-Lux 4 is upgradeable to.

I hope so -- I find the WB on the D-Lux4 to be pretty bad (and one of the updates to LX3 improves WB).

Are you saying you prefer the Panasonic JPEGs over the Digilux 2 JPEGs?

JT

For in-camera B&W, yes. For snapshots I really couldn't care less. In every other circumstance I shoot my LC-1 in RAW mode.

YMMV.

Rather a condescending remark... Snapshots?

My reading of what Bill wrote is that he's quite clearly referring to his own photographs. I think we should allow him to call his 'snapshots' snapshots - though if we insist on him calling them masterpieces I'm sure he'd agree.

Steve's right, of course. Perhaps it's a cultural thing.

"Snapshots" are the images I take that capture a moment but have no aspiration to "art". Hardly condescending, merely descriptive. I can take a snapshot with a Leica or a cameraphone - it's still a snapshot. No point in being precious or pretentious about it. If someone sees it and calls it, as Steve says, a "masterpiece", that's their choice

As a general rule I would not use jpg for anything intended from the outset for display or publication unless, as in my post above, I had a good reason to do so.

Regards,

Bill

The AWB on both my DLUX4 n LX3 r great, in fact they're better than my EOS40D.

Mine seems to have some problems in the lighting in my house -- which is mostly tungsten bulbs. Not sure why, but I can correct it with the WB adjustments settings (which I like very much, but would be better for it to be more correct off the bat). Elsewhere (outside under all conditions) it's excellent.

... Snapshots?

If I understand the usage, German uses similar terminology--Schnappschuß is just a picture made on the spur of the moment, same as a 'grab shot,' which I think is similar to what Bill is referring to.

I'm also pretty satisfied with the D-Lux 4's AWB, but I'm shooting RAW.

Few cameras have an AWB that gets down and dirty with tungsten. Don't know why.

For example, data from the Panasonic LX3 and Nikon D200 manuals:
