Amazon.com to sell the M8

Unexpected :)

"Unexpected" is right--and scary and sad, in my opinion, though I'm sure others will disagree.

If Amazon tries to undercut the market (I doubt they will), this could mean people taking up counter time at slightly more expensive dealers' shops, then ordering 'cheap.' Since Amazon can't furnish technical assistance, the purchaser may run into a situation in which the local dealer won't help. Overall, steep discounters will lead to a weakening of the dealer support base. We had that in the 60's thru 80's in the US, till Roger Horn turned things around.

On the other hand, Leica US tends to make dealers toe the line pretty well these days, so Amazon would just be another possible source when your dealer was out. Another player keeping the price accessible and the local dealer honest.

Very interesting. Thanks for the post!

Graham--Estonia isn't part of the EU, is it? Do you pay VAT? (Tallinn is a lovely town, but we Texans don't keep up with the rest of the world very well... :o)

There's no such market called,"Amazon." They usually sell digicams from Adorama or other places else. Therefore, they have no way of knowing when to see sell or how much they offer unless they hear anything from their merchants. However, adorama has put out their sale for pre-order already! Interesting~

Philip--

My error! I've never even thought to research Leica on Amazon. Thanks for letting me know there's nothing new here! :o

Tommy--

You may be right.

In the US there is an "Amazon.com," with warehouses at several locations in the country. With CD's for example, one often buys direct from Amazon, though sometimes they tell you an item isn't available thru them and direct you to one of their bedmates. And some merchandise is, as you said, available only from outsiders.

I like the line on the link Graham gave us: "This item is currently not available. Request this item from another seller." Looks as if they're trying to cover all bases. ;)

And how about the suggestion "Get it for less? Order it used." -- I wish!

I think it's a good idea that Amazon are selling the camera - it will make it much more widely available to people who are not within sensible travelling distance of a Leica dealer. I buy all my equipment through mail order/online because that saves travel time. Schlepping through the London traffic to deal with a salesman is not my idea of fun.

I think everyone is glossing over a very important issue. You would not advertise it if it was all the way to the end of November. What does that tell you. Rest my case:D
