My new (used) Digilux 2 came today! (…not)

I have closely been monitoring my new camera's far too slow voyage towards its new home. It came into customs on Friday and then again on Sunday (I gather it must be first the French speaking part of the customs and then the Dutch speaking ;) – only hope they will not put it through the German speaking too…) so when the bell chimed this morning I flew down the stairs, caught a few bruises (so already felt like a war photographer even before holding the Leica for the first time) and saw the postman with a big sack only partially successful in hiding the big package inside.

Teeming with happiness I barely abstained from kissing this excellent public servant (which surely would be a federal offense) and ran up the many steps again with my loot. The sack was heavy (I sent sympathetic thoughts to Santa) which did not surprise me. The dealer is a reputable one, so he obviously packed it well, and besides it is a Lecia – heavy stuff anyway :)

Took a long, hard and deep breadth, found the scissors, cut into the sack and saw a ruined cardboard box. Oh no! Carefully, oh so carefully, drew out the box and opened it… BOOKS?!?!?! I had totally forgotten everything about my Amazon order. No Leica – bummer

On the upside “Dream Street” by Sam Stephenson was inside, twice, even, since I apparently hit the wrong button when ordering…, and that is a good read. I am sure, tonight, I will dream of being another Eugene. That, and that the postman stops by tomorrow again. Cross examined the wife tonight and she confessed to not having ordered anything from anywhere. So when the postman comes again (who said twice) it must be the Leica (unless, of course, the dog frequented http://www.oldbones4old.dogs again).

Well, what is worth having, is worth waiting for :D

Worth waiting for Purpledot...you're gonna have to get used to waiting for the D2 'cause it's a camera that refuses to be rushed..unless you put it on manual everything and shoot small files then she perks up a bit..I have mine nearly 2 years and it is a great camera to learn on and I took to 35mm manual shooting like a duck to water after doing my initial fumblings on the D2...P.S...it shoots b&w beautifully...Good luck with it...Liam

Thanks Liam - I'll slow down as much as I can - although after seeing this status tonight my heart raced on :D

"Your item cleared customs in BELGIUM at 8:36 AM on November 20, 2008"

So it gotta be here tomorrow - fingers crossed - or rather today!

Well, it finally got here. First usable shot. Love the angled flash. Got to get used to the AF.

Forgot: Converted to bw in elements 6 - std settings for camera. No additional sharpness applied. Looks pretty sharp on my PC - comments on sharpness much appreciated!

Looks very good, but I would sharpen a bit more. I have never shot anything which doesn't need some sharpening. Glad you finally got your camera. Having purchased many time on ebay, I know the feeling of having to wait for something like a camera, hoping that it will not get lost in the mail.

I am so happy for you! You sound justifiably excited.

Lovely picture of your dog as well. I might be tempted to tweak it in Levels to improve the highlight tones, in particular, and possibly the dark ones too. Then judge if further sharpening is required.

Thanks Ravduc and David for your comments and feedback - I find "perfect" sharpening difficult to judge on my laptop's screen so input sorely needed :)

Hope you don't mind. Tweaked the levels and sharpened by 40 / radius 1 / Threshold nil. I always prefer to use low settings in camera and sharpen as part of the post processing. Enjoy the D2.

Not at all - will try experimenting with low settings. And will enjoy - I promise ;)

Congratulations on chosing the D2.

Here is one of my 1st D2 shots back in 2005....using standard/default settings for everything...

Beautiful! Wonderful fur detail and I love the halo.
