...the M was always a wideangle camera...

HCB must be turning over in his grave, Howard.

For a dozen of grumpies like me the best M ever was the M3 and a couple of us even prefer the 1:1 viewfinder which allows us to shoot both eyes open with a nearly panoramic vision.

We don't use wides very much as we 'see' in 50mm and DoF is wider with the crop factor so that using an accessory finder is a bearable compromise for us.

Leica have decided to launch a 0.68x body, which was another compromise in terms of focus accuracy, remains to see if another version of the digital M will allow people like me to get what we want.

Otherwise, Epson did it already and Zeiss or Cosina won't forget us hopefully.

Ohmigosh, LCT! Sorry to offend. :(

I can't argue taste, of course, and the M3 had many beautiful advantages that were lost with the M2 et seq.

But I guess that's the point I was making: Everything since the M3 has leaned toward the wide side. So in terms of history and units sold, I think the M series *is* primarily a wide angle camera.

And another thing--did HCB own any lens longer than a 50? I kinda thought I had him on my side! ;)

Drat. If you're right, I may need to reconsider my Hologon fetish!

You know what would have been neat? A sliding, click-in-place 1.25 magnifier built into the camera, that you could move back and forth depending on which lens you were using

Or how about a thread in version of your suggestion? That would work. Is anyone in China listening?

...did HCB own any lens longer than a 50?...

He's probably owned a lot of lenses, Howard, but you know what he said:

« Moi, le 50mm c'est ma vie. Une certaine distance avec les gens.

Le grand angle gueule, et le 90mm me rappelle ces cornets acoustiques qu'utilisaient autrefois les vieilles dames. »

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Photoportraits sans guillemets

Hervé Guibert, Le Monde 10/10/1985

Free translation:

The 50mm lens is my life. A certain distance with people.

The wide angle shouts, and the 90mm reminds me those ear trumpets that old ladies used to use in the past.
