Last week I got my Leica ii a screwmount Summicron 1:2/35 ASPH for its 72nd birthday and we went for a walk along the Hillsborough river outside Tampa, FL. We ran across a grade shool art show and I shot from the river side shade into the colorful festivities. Fujicolor Superia ASA 400, 1/60 @ f8, discount store develop and scan to CD, minimal enhancement except for 600x400px crop for pub here. (Pics of this outfit are posted in "Leica II" thread.)

Interesting shot but the artist seems a bit short of new ideas. I have hankered after a screwmount Summicron. Is the element layout the same as a bayonet version? I think they are all post war. Does anyone have long-term experience ?

Yes, I'm still testing this lens when I have time. I took a series of focus-and-bokeh test shots side-by-side with my 35mm Cron IV. I marked the backside of the photos and randomly placed them on a table and picked out the best ones. Seven out of eight times in this admittedly non-scientific test I picked the ASPH shot. It is ever-so-slightly sharper, especially at the corners, and the bokeh is ever-so-slightly different but equally pleasing, so that justifies the expense for me.

 

BTW, FlatFour, in the 60s I owned one of the first Porsches in the US, it was the split-windshield 356 with narrow 16" wheels, and hardly more than a VW flat-four. It was really good in the Colorado snow on dates but the heater left a lot to be desired. I was a photog for the college paper and annual and my iiif/Summarit was always in the bag behind the big armchair Reuter reclining leather seats. Still have that photo rig, recently CLA'd and going strong. Sorry, no pictures survived of the car.

Here's next weekend's partners (along with my understanding wife, of course). I plan to take tripod and shoot ASA 100 film to get least amount of grain, try for sharpest pictures. Somewhere around here I have a Dimage Scan Elite 5400, as I recall it takes forever for a scan but I need to know how good my equipment/technique is. (My wet B&W darkroom is long gone.)

shutterbug - I too hade a V screen - not split - 356. It was a left hand drive car which had been raced by a US serviceman in the western zone of Germany. He crashed it and I bought it from breakers in the UK. I had to sell it eventually as I was an impecunious student and couldn't afford new windscreens every three months. Two popped out so there must have been some distortion somewhere. The road holding was a revelation to me at that time and it never let me down. I just carried goggles in the car. As you say the heater was useless so they introduced the Eberspacher burner but it cost an arm and a leg.
