Each evening the Elephants that live in South Luanga National Park cross the river Luanga to raid the crops of the villagers that live just outside the park.

JAAP- I really like this shot and your crop of it, great capture and mood!

Without wanting to hijack your thread Jaap, there's an interesting issue you've raised about the raiding party.

Sadly in many areas of Africa as human populations and associated farming have expanded around and into wildlife areas we end up with this conflict. Subsistence farmers are killed by elephants trying to protect their crops and elephants are killed because agriculture, mainly maize which is too tempting to resist, is encroaching into their habitat. Several organisations have come up with a solution which seems to be working. They're assisting farmers to plant chili plants around their crops and another method is a rope strung around plantations dipped in chili powder and oil and then burnt, this scent keeps the elephants away. The chilis are also exported to Europe and have created a new source of income for some of these impoverished rural communities and in many cases lessen the demands which locals continue to place on an area's plant and animal resources.
