R compatibiity - Leica Fotographie says no.

Well, Dr Kaufmann told me himself 2 days before Photokina that there would be a R lens to S2 adapter. However, he told me that it would not be available immediately.

Yes, there was some miscommunication regarding this hypothetical adapter. But since then, Leica has made it quite clear that there will be no such adapter. How was it supposed to work anyway, given the difference in flange distance and the problems with vignetting?

... a moment of confusion, I think... ;) it would be sufficient that R lenses prove to cover well a 24x36 sensor... maybe they could implement in S2 a "reduced frame" function, but there is the problem of sensor to lens flange distance ... even if (seems to me) this is a S2 spec that has not been officially disclosured.

Rather than a simple adapter, it could have a "divergent" glass element, allowing for a lens to sensor distance greater than in R cameras, keeping the infinity focus.

Of course with only partial coverage of the sensor.

Of course with image quality decrease.

Of course it is not sure it is worth to buy and use!

I guess they won't develop it. I'll wait for the R10.

Fernando.

On page 28 of LFI issue 7/2008 it states, "The S2 will be incompatible with R lenses, which doesn't mean that the R system is over."

What do LFI know that we don't?

I recall reading that Dr Kaufmann stated at Photokina that R lenses would be compatible with the S2, via an adapter.

What's the sum of knowledge on this? What form would an adapter take? How much of the sensor would R lenses use?

Today at the Leica webinar, Leica stated that the R10 will be compatible with current R lenses, but that the S2 will not be. The distance to the image plane is about 10mm deeper with the S2 than with R cameras, so an R lens on an S2 would not even come close to focusing at infinity, let alone have the coverage for the bigger sensor.

He also said that the price of the S2 will be competitive with the current cameras out in digital medium format. Considering Hasselblad just had major cuts in prices, that would seem to be a very interesting development.

Okey Dokey. That works for me.

For the next two years I'll be looking for my R10 while thinking along the lines of "Where's my jetpack?"
