jaapv Posted November 3, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The electronic failure of my DMR has also corrupted the DNGs on a number of cards. The data are there- the file sizes are correct - but they cannot be read. Does anybody know what recovery software to use, or a reasonably priced recovery service? sdai Posted November 3, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 3, 2008 I'm not sure about your case, but here's a couple of things you can try: Software Products
jaapv Posted November 3, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted November 3, 2008 It is not the card that is corrupted, it is that the files cannot be read by ACR. Somehow the DMR made a mistake in writing the format, corrupting the files themselves.
fefe Posted November 3, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 3, 2008 You tried opening them with cornerfix ?
sdai Posted November 3, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 3, 2008 Have you tried any other software to open it? I've never seen stuff like this, it sounds like the file header of the DNG is corrupted so ACR can't open it. If this is the case, you need to find someone who can reconstruct the file header. When you highlight the image in Bridge, can you see any metadata at all?
jaapv Posted November 3, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted November 3, 2008 No, no metadata. Image ingester cannot read them either...
sdai Posted November 3, 2008 Share #7 Posted November 3, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is only my guess because I've never done it myself ... try someone who is specialized in data recovery and familiar with image data files, what they'll do is probably try to extract the image data from the container file first and then attach a set of "good" metadata to the image data so a RAW converter can read it. Prepare to pay for a premium if these images are critical to you ... there seems to a lot of hackers on this forum, perhaps they can offer some help too. Good luck! Overgaard Posted November 3, 2008 Share #8 Posted November 3, 2008 It might not be it, but I would try to run them through MediaRECOVER which does not touch the card itself, but create the files where you define it (on the harddrive or so). Worked for me when I accidently deleted a SD-card with both DNG files (from the DMR) and JPG files (from the D2). As you know, those two cameras require different formatting. The program created .TIF files, as it called them, which was recognized by all other software as DNG files. Works rather fast and stable, a couple of hours to recover a 2 GB card, and with preview of what it finds as it's working. Free program as far as I know, or free trial. It came with some of the Sandisk cards. You need to run this to recover the files from the SD card. BTW, did you get my note in the other thread not to use SD cards in the DMR that were formatted in the M8? Are you on a Mac or a PC? What brand of SD cards were they? I had a similar problem last week on the last card I shot. I was in a rush and I don't think I formatted the card when I put it in the camera. I always do this now because of the problem I have had with the M8 cards. The files when copied to the computer had the correct size, but would not open in any program. The Sandisk Rescue pro recovered the eight images from the card, plus numerous other images from months past. Keep in mind that you will need to recover off the orignal SD cards. Hi Jaap, I not sure it will work for you, but it work for me before for a corrupted dng file. No harm to try it and hope it work for you also Copy the corrupted dng file into a folder. Download the lastest copy of the DNG camera raw convert from the adobe. Run the DNG Converter. Select the folder and option for output. robsteve Posted November 4, 2008 Share #14 Posted November 4, 2008 Jaap: Are you on a Mac or PC? I have about five copies of the image rescue program that came with my cards and I could send you a registration code for an unused copy. Robert

robsteve Posted November 5, 2008 Share #18 Posted November 5, 2008 A thank-you to Robert, who sent me Rescue-Pro I'll try that first. You need to run it against the cards. Put a card in the reader, start the program and choose the drive letter that represents the reader. I was thinking about your problem and I bet it is battery related. When I had the problem on my last card, I think my battery had gone dead while writing the images. In my case, it was the last card of the day and had only eight images on it. The battery was getting low and I was shooting long exposures. Robert
jaapv Posted November 5, 2008 Author Share #19 Posted November 5, 2008 No- really not. I always use fresh batteries - I have four and these files are on five cards - 490 shots all the same problem. The camera is on its way to Solms...
