Mea Culpa. I do not own a Leica yet, but would like to finally treat myself to one. May I please solicit your opinions as to which one would be the better purchase; VLux 1 or DLux 4? DL4 of course has newer technology and bigger sensor but VL1 has much greater zoom. Picture quality is the end game in this choice. Thanks!

Stuart -

Welcome to the Forum.

Both cameras are quite capable, but they are very different. Perhpas we can better answer if you tell us the types of situations you expect to be shooting in, the types of subjects, how important size is, and whatever else you can let us in on.

Thanks for asking:) Forgive me in advance for dumbing down the forum with this neophyte question. I would like to own just one camera for use in all situations, ie, vacation (landscapes), family occasions, and general pleasure shooting. Night pics are also of interest. Macro isn't that important or is size. Sure, a small camera like the C-Lux or D-Lux is easier to pack on trips, but a clear, sharp image is more important to me. I just worry that the V-Lux has technology that already has been improved on.

There is an important difference for me, that is FRAMING ; I used sometime the VLux of a friend of mine, and have at home (a gift I made to my daughter) a Panasonic rather similar to the Dlux : well I realized that I DON'T LIKE AT ALL taking a picture looking at a LCD screen : eye into a viewfinder is what I like, and with the VLux you have also a very appreciable zoom; this, for me, is more than sufficient to renounce to the superior compactness of a camera like the Dlux.

I have had both. I returned the V-lux1 because I did not think the image quality was good enough. I then bought a M8 and subsequently bought the D-Lux 4.

I think the image quality of the D-Lux 4 is great. The video quality is outstanding. The wide angle lens and F/2 give the camera great versatility. The size is very convenient. The only thing it lacks for me is a telephoto lens, which thus far I have not missed.

The V-Lux 1 is better for you if you prefer to have a telephoto. If you instead want image quality, I would go for the D-Lux 4.

I sold my M8 and re-bought a V-Lux 1

No more dust spot removal for me!

Image quality has been surprisingly good in largest .jpg format, with much less computer fiddling.

Also re-bought the Digilux 2 for the M type experience.

If I had to choose one all-purpose camera, the V-Lux would be it.

And the $250 Leica USA rebate makes it a bargain as well...

Stuart (Nice name, and spelled the right way, BTW) -

If you expect to take a lot of interior shots, the 35 MM equivalent wide end of the V-Lux might not be wide enough for you. If you expect to take widelife shots, the D-Lux will not give you enough reach. Regarding buying into old technolcogy, face it, technology is advancing so quickly that something better in some one or more aspects might be released at anytime. You need to commit. Below are some photos that I took in November of 2005 with a forerunner of the V-Lux -- older, cheaper technology. Though we're just looking at jpegs reduced for the Internet, I think you might find the V-Lux image quality meets your needs. So, perhaps it comes back to what you plan to shoot, and whether wide (D-Lux) or long (V-Lux) will have a bigger draw for you.

Stuart, I don't possess either of your short-listed options. However, looking at your requirement and provided you really do not want the wide angle features of the DLux4, the V-Lux1 would seem to be a sensible choice. Having seen Stuart (Stuny)'s stunning pictures taken with its predecessor, it really is a 'no-brainer'. However, I guess if you go that route, you will be getting a PanaLeica compact later for everyday use!

Stuart: I think you've proved (again, if anybody needed it) that its the photographer, not the camera that makes the difference. If the tool is competent (and, surely, both the D Lux 4 & the V-Lux 1 are that), then its a matter of what the photographer is trying to do with the tool. IMO, in terms of IQ, neither will match an M8. OTOH, the D Lux can be thrown into a pocket. And the V-Lux can be a heck of a lot more convenient than a full kit of lenses & body (or bodies, even) with most of the optical versatility. My work around for the limited wide angle on the V Lux was to get a wide converter, but each to his/her own.

Great shots!

Hello... it has been a long time since I visited this site.

Now that I am considering another purchase for a new Leica, I've got a question.

Which one between Vlux and Dlux 4 have better RAW buffer? I am coming from Nikon D300 , so RAW buffer is very important to me.

Thanks
