grduprey Posted October 22, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know this has probably been covered centuries ago, but I cannot find it, so here goes. I have been told that some R8s have to be modified before they can be used with the DMR. What are the symptoms, and what serial numbers are effected? I am asking as I just bought a used DMR for use on my R8, and want to know if I need to get it modified. Also to answer the obvious question, I am in Europe and my R8 is in the US, and I will not be back for another 3 to 4 weeks. Thanks, Gene
Advertisement Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Hi grduprey, Take a look here R8 and the DMR. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
topoxforddoc Posted October 22, 2008 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2008 Gene, It's generally to do with the electrical contacts that mate the base of the R8 to the DMR. Some of the earlier R8s don't mate properly and hence won't fire up and close down as they should. If your R8 has flat electrical contacts on its base, then it MAY not work, but it just might. If it has dimpled contacts, then it PROBABLY will work. It's difficult to know until you try it. Remember, you have to turn the DMR off by pressing the on/off button on the DMR back display. (on the R9, turning the mode selector dial on the top turns the DMR on AND off). Charlie
robsteve Posted October 22, 2008 Share #3 Posted October 22, 2008 I think there is also a software problem in some cameras as well. some of the R9 also have a problem waking the DMR. The R8 with the software problem have a problem when shooting on continous. I think it will fire a few shots then hang. In either case, there is not a list of serial numbers tha that do or do not work with the DMR. I had a very very early R8 and it worked on my DMR. When I bought a new R9 when my original early R9 (which workded on the DMR) had metering problems, this new R9 would not turn the DMR on and off with the camera mode switch. KLepler Posted October 22, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2008 Hey Gene, I have an early R8 (flat contacts) and no problems at all. I got the tipp that i should clean the contacts (on the R8) if it won't work as one would think when attaching the DMR for the first time. As my contacts have been completely clean I did not need that. BUT - every time I detached and re-attached the DMR (to clean mostly..... what other reason there is to open that again...) It did not transport on its own, I had to advance one exposure with the manual lever.... after that it worked again completely without any problems. This summer I had my equipement at Solms at the service and they changed a lot of things onmy R8... now it just works fine - without any problems - also nothing of the mentioned problems here. As far as I know Leica changes the contacts and some other things for free.... that of course would mean shipping the R8 with the DMR to Germany... A completely other question - there is a firmware update available - I suppose you updated already... ;-) cheers, Kai
grduprey Posted October 23, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted October 23, 2008 Thanks everyone, it sounds like I just need to try it and see, but it sounds like a fix that will not be to bad outside of sending the R8 and maybe the DMR to Leica. Unfortunately my R8 is in Iowa, and right now I am in Spain, the DMR is in Germany. ;-) We leave for Germany tomorrow, and then we get ready to leave for home after 3 months here in Europe. My M8 has done great , but I have wished for the R for some shooting. ;-) As for the firmware update, the DMR has the 1.1 version, and I'm not sure I can update it without the R8. topoxforddoc Posted October 23, 2008 Share #6 Posted October 23, 2008 Gene, The 1.3 firmware can only be updated on a working R/DMR unit. When you get home, clean the contacts and have a go. Sometimes, you have to put it together a couple fo times, just to get it seated properly. Good luck. Charlie
