DMR failure - anyone tried this one?

This morning I shot a small series with the DMR, but when I wanted to check, only the first frame was stored on the card.

So when I turn off the camera, turn it back on again, it's still not recording any more pictures than the first one it did just before.

If I take out the battery, wait a little bit, restart again, I'm able to take another frame. But only one.

Everything works normally, except it doesn't record the picture.

Tried three different SD-cards (even different brands), two batteries.

Help?

Hallelujahs!

Formatted card, changed user, resat user, changed date, cleaned SD-slot. No go.

Cleaned contacts between camera and DMR. Worked. It works again!

Going to UK to shoot for a week so I can't tell you how relieved I am that I don't have to go into a panic (didn't get there yet ;-)

Thanks for the quick responses. Had Leica Denmark and Germany numbers on the screen here, ready to call everybody if it didn't work.

Is your DMR on a R8 or R9? If it is on a R8, does the R8 have the newer contacts on the bottom. The newer contact style has little dimples in them for the winder pins to recess into and make a better contact.

Even back in the days of film, if a R8 started acting up, it usually was the contacts that needed cleaning. Either the ones under the film rails or the ones on the bottom if a winder or motor was being used.

Another area that will also cause problems on the DMR is the battery contacts. If they are dirty and your palm presses against the battery and the battery moves, it can shut the camera down. This can lead to unwritten files or corrupted SD card.

Hi Robert,

My DMR had this problem at the beginning but it was a defective battery housing. The power/motor modul was changed in Solms and the problem is totally gone.

Before my trip to Solms I temporary solved the problem with a soft-self-adesive spacer at the end of the battery housing just to avoid the battery play and it was running.

Cheers

I'm using the R8 currently which was updated two years ago after a motor glimpse. So I think it's the new ones but will check with the R9 when I come back in a week.

It's incredible how many errors arise due to those contacts - and can be solved by cleaning them. Seem so low-technology it should just work.¨

Anyway, cleaned them and it worked again.

But learned to check if the red light is blinking after shooting. Don't use preview and basically always have trusted the DMR to record the file on the card. We learn something new every day.
