andybarton Posted October 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted October 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Don't touch it. It's malware. I wouldn't normally post a warning against malware, but this is very unusual on the Mac platform, so is worth a mention. We have been very fortunate with OSX in particular in that it seems to be inherently risk free, when compared to some other OSs out there and it's easy to get complacent. This stroke of genius claims to be anti-virus software, but isn't, so is doubly dangerous. Macworld | Intego warns against MacGuard malware

Kent10D Posted October 18, 2008 Share #3 Posted October 18, 2008 Yes, thanks Andy. Us Mac users have been lulled into a warm, fuzzy sense of security by the general robustness of our chosen platform. That makes it relatively easy for morally depraved bottom-feeding criminal f%#kheads to infiltrate our systems by sweet-talkin' subterfuge. Caution is good. But "some other OSs out there"? You mean *the* other OS (pssst -> "Windows") don't you?
Marquinius Posted October 18, 2008 Share #4 Posted October 18, 2008 Thanks, worth mentioning as indeed we've been spared mostly. Marco

rob_x2004 Posted October 18, 2008 Share #8 Posted October 18, 2008 Just checked Software Update, the only new stuff is Migration and DVD/CD sharing. Is there somewhere else I should be checking?
peterv Posted October 18, 2008 Share #9 Posted October 18, 2008 Thanks for the information. I've had NetBarrier on my Mac for almost a year now and maybe it's getting time to buy VirusBarrier as well. Us Mac users have indeed been lucky so far, but eventually cybercriminals may catch up. All my photo's are on my Mac and this machine is online every day for at least 10 hours. Of course I do back ups, but only once a week or so, Peter

fWord Posted October 23, 2008 Share #11 Posted October 23, 2008 Thanks for the headsup. With a Mac I'd surf into websites I wouldn't dare to touch with a Windows system. Could still be doing some damage but I've yet to see it.
Sandokan Posted October 28, 2008 Share #12 Posted October 28, 2008 Bad news guys - the number of Mac viruses and malware is increasing and you would be safer with Linux today :-( Sophos and Symantec both have AV products. I can get hold of both and do a comparison for you, but you will have to wait until I get my new Mac as this old one doesnt have enough disc space for even a photo. Actually, as it stands, there are no viruses out there that could affect a Mac OS X system. The few that existed run on OS 9. The main problem (which is platform-free) are programs that require the user to authenticate and install thus gaining root access. For this, there is no single piece of software that will protect you. It's just a case of being alert to software/people that promise too much and to ANYTHING that requires authentication/your password to run/install etc.
rob_x2004 Posted October 28, 2008 Share #14 Posted October 28, 2008 I guess some people are thicker than I am; "Clues as to the software’s dubious background include poorly-pasted Apple graphics, language containing many spelling errors, and a lack of features consistent with a Mac-specific security program, according to Intego. And who are Intego anyway? Are selling something:D :D? "Intego suspects the developers of the MacGuard software may be trying to harvest credit card numbers or may be laying the groundwork for an even more invasive attempt at distributing Mac malware in the future. “Intego is issuing this memo to help Mac users understand... Jeez Louise, Mac issues something like two hundred and fifty megs of all sorts of upgrades nearly every other month. Why would anyone want to dl more?
