Leica S2 compared to MF

The S2 has been out with trusted Pro's and in at least 10 studios for development feedback. What was at PK was the early prototype. All the info needed is back at Solms and the interpretation of that feedback and subsequent modification is what is holding the S2 back from an immediate launch.

As primarily an editorial & commercial photographer, using digital backs since 11MP, here are the two features I hope they'll implement :

• a conveniently placed user-button programmable for momentary AF when the camera is set to manual focus. Better than half depress of the shutter release and recompose.

• 5:4 ratio crop mode [for vertical compositions] with the viewfinder appropriately masked a la Nikon D3

Billy it is a slip differential so manual focus is at any time and i would guess at half button release for AF. If I read you right than a separate AF button ala Canon and Nikon. That is dedicated to AF. I agree that would be nice to have a thumb button for the AF .

Lens-wise, there's too much of a gap between 70mm and 120mm.

A fast 100mm and/or short zoom 50-110mm would be great, both with Central Shutter.

Yea i keep saying a 130mm or 140mm F2 . We all have different perspectives on that and I wanted to dump the 100 3.5

Maybe an AF button is already done according to David Farkas Photography Blog: Photokina 2008 - Day 1 - All things Leica

The 3” screen is large and the menu access buttons are easy to get to, but not overly easy to accidentally press. The top right button is dedicated to EV lock in shooting mode as it sits pretty close to your thumb when shooting. This is customizable to be AF-on, AF lock, EV lock, or AF/EV lock.

I hope the S2 will have some sort of sensor dust removal,

and I wonder how they'll cool the CCD ?

looks like there is a lot of aluminum around it... maybe some titanium... like the one they use to cool down calipers on Moto GP bike brakes.

about the dust, I think we might forget about it. Anything in front of the sensor is a sharpness threat.

Nice find Billy , that sounds like the button we would need. I do that today with my Phase One body is dedicate that rear button for AF, just a menu item. Great stuff

My D300 Nikon had that in the menu items was to change it to a grid . I really liked that option also. Great idea . I wonder also if we can change focusing screens on this

Except the upper right screen button looks to be even further away when the optional vertical grip is attached.

Guy-

Thanks for such an informative thread and don't let the criticisms get you down...

Any idea on WHEN the S2 will really be available? I am one of the legions fo R devotees who feels very abandonned at this time. Do you think they will ever produce an R10 or should I just plan on selling everything and moving over to the S2 in the future? :)

Thanks Albert. On the R it seems they will make it but 35mm DSLR is a really tough market. There is a thread about the new Sony on my forum and have to say that camera looks really nice so far, needs some better raw software but the price tag of 3k is amazing for a 24mpx camera. Not sure if I was leica or anyone else jumping in that market, it's a bear with the new pricing going on. What I am seeing leica do and it is pretty smart is being unique like the only RF and the only Mid system. Nothing wrong with being different and offer a different product. Certainly the only game in town with these 2 systems. I think they should make the R but really make it simple and cheap and add a few AF lenses to it and tap off the S2 technology and cut the sensor down to size and forget being a real Leica ( high build quality) camera on it. I think they are better off on the M and S to be real honest. Here they can play all they want without conforming to what the C,N and S camera's are doing. The R just getting some market share out of it is tough.

Now they announced the S and from what some are saying looks like next Summer. heck going to be a long winter. LOL

For me I am pretty happy right now with MF so that will hopefully keep my patience in check but would really love to see this a lot sooner. Rumurs of Nikon now which i find a stretch getting in the Mid system but sooner or later they may just do it. They have enough start up money for a new line for sure and actually there T/S lenses the new 24,45 and 85 already have the image circle big enough for a Mid system , just remount them in a different barrel and they have three lenses out of the gate. Never say never

Albert,

There will be a R10. At least that's what Andreas Kaufmann told me personally a fortnight ago, when he was in the UK. It might be another year or two before you can get your hands on the product though. Are you unhappy with your DMR? I'm still really pleased with the image quality from mine.

Best wishes,

Charlie

;) I love my R9DMR but the technology is so old and cumbersome. I will soldier on with it but will seriously look at the S2 with adaptor as a solution. I am happy to know that the boss is committed to an R10...someday..

Albert

Albert,

It's 'old and cumbersome', but it delivers great images. No-one criticises the film M cameras for being old and slower to use.

We are told that the S2 is a tad smaller than either the Nikon D3 or Canon Ds2Mkiii. Has anyone seen a picture to prove this? My R9 with DMR is certainly smaller in profile than either, perhaps a bit deeper front to back. It is certainly better looking than either of them. So does this mean that the S2 will be about the same size as the existing R9/DMR? If so how about the weight I wonder? The styling is very R9 ish to my eyes.
