Anyone know where I can buy one of these? Ralph Gibson / Boutique

(Just the strap.. not the camera..:-) ) He used to (I believe ) sell them on the site, but apparently no longer does. I've tried to have several leatherworkers make one for me... but apparently it's a pretty hard one to do.. something called a "4 strand Mystery Braid" or something.. and no-one I've talked to, so far, can, or wants to try.

I love it.. the braid acts as as a shock absorber, and would seem to also keep on one's shoulder. A friend of mine sent Ralph an e-mail regarding how/if/where; but has received no reply. I want one for my M-2

He has taken some extraordinary shots as well. Have you looked at his archive?. And does he look like Mel Gibson to anyone- it's the eyes

I personally don't think you can beat the standard strap that Leica make. It is very secure, does not absorb water and I think works fine.

I have Domke straps on all my cameras - IMHO, they are the best you can get. They are extremely strong and secure and have saved my cameras from disaster more than once.

BTW, get one of the solid, one piece models, not the ones with quick detach clips - the one piece is much more secure.

Each to his own on camera straps of course, but as I often wrap the strap around my wrist I'm not an Upstrap fan. Though if I always had the camera on my shoulder I can see the virtue in them. My current fave is the Artisan & Artist padded strap.

I have to agree on the Gibson M being seriously ugly though. Notice the lack of preview lever though? I guess that's what Gibson means when Leica are willing to work with him.

Strange as it sounds, I had a dream about a black Leica with red covering last night, then I see this...

And I'm sorry, but that red M6 is hideous. He'd have to pay me $6500 to shoot with it!

LOL.. maybe, but it's not an M-6; it's an MP.... specially modified. Ralph's been using MP bodies for years. His aren't red, either (last I saw). :)

Actually; I believe that Leica has a special program where most anybody can order up special "custom" Leicas. Ralph's been on Leica's "most favored" list for a long time, too.

I'll stick with my silver M-2's

  • 4 weeks later...

I ordered a custom strap from Peter Mayer, in BC Canada. He posted a picture of a strap similar to the one he made for me earlier in the forum. Mine's essentially the same idea.. with a few minor changes.. different color... so I'm not going to post a photo of it.

I can't recommend Peter enough!! He's a superb craftsman, and I had my strap within 2 weeks of ordering it.. reg mail from Canada to NYC!!

Most importantly, he took the effort to offer me different design choices.. and explained the ins and outs of each idea. Bottom line.. I got exactly what I hoped for, and wanted, at a good price. No.. I won't reveal the price I paid because each design / length / leather type / width would be different. These are strictly custom made to individual specs. Best to contact Peter directly thru this forum for specific details.

I realize that a braided strap may not be for everyone. I personally love the idea because it's very strong.. yet supple and flexible, and only improves with age. Perhaps most importantly.. the braid tends to grip your shoulder, so the camera does not slip off. No need of a cumbersome "pad" to get in the way. (I hate those). It also is very easy to wrap around your wrist, as I often do with my M-2. As to adjustable length.. honestly.. once I've set my straps to the length I like best for each camera; I've never changed them. So, it's never been an issue.

Finally.. it looks really cool on the camera !! What could better suit a Leica than a custom unique strap..?? :-)

Thanks, Peter.

These straps are beautiful, but does anybody remember the contoured straps that were made for the first SLR Contax RTS? The ends were like the Domke straps, and others, but the center section, slightly wider, was contoured [curved, rather than straight], so that the camera hung off the shoulder without tilting forward or back, and just wouldn't slip with torso movement. When on the neck, the camera hung without strain. Hasselblad makes one, but it's very expensive, and way too long. If someone would make those.....
