cnguyen Posted September 25, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 25, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm sure this topic has been discussed before. I still believe Leica threw away perfectly good DMR design and opted for a complete new R10 body. If they can slap on a slightly bigger FF chip, rework the firmware then voila they have a new R10 solution with less cost for manufacturing . I still own an R8 and lenses and what better way to enhance my collection with a new DMR MKII. I put off buying the DMR hoping Leica will come up the the new R10 this photokina but now we all now it's not coming this year at least. I kept thinking about getting a Canon 5D so I can put my R lenses on it but after owning few Canon Dslrs (1.3X and 1.5X) and seeing it's image signature I decided to forego the idea all together. Leica might not have rights/permissions to redesign/retrofit the DMR ? Does anyone know ?

Introduction of a new DMR run requires sales numbers that can not be met, especially with an R10 coming in the next 2 years.
stuny Posted September 25, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 25, 2008 Charles - The DMR's sensor size is at least partly dictated by the R8/R9 chassis -- A bigger sensor would not work. I'm glad I have one of the relatively few DMRs made (5,000 is the generally mentioned production run nubmer).
rsolomon Posted September 26, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 26, 2008 The DMR and modular approach was a great idea and design. It's a shame it was leveraged more, i t think the profit would have been in leveraging the concept and design for more than one production run

Jamie Roberts Posted September 26, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 26, 2008 I'm glad too; I love it. But I'm very excited about getting a truly integrated digital R system based on the S2. While I love the ergonomics of my R9, the entire DMR package is just a little unwieldy for me shooting 8-10 hours. I wanted the new R yesterday; I'm a little disappointed it's not here now, so some of my money goes to Nikon, which is a shame. Still, I'm waiting to see the S2's leadership translate into an R form factor
andybarton Posted September 26, 2008 Share #7 Posted September 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Apart from the Hassleblad/Imacon issue (which got a WHOLE lot worse this week... ), Stuart is right. There is no way that a larger sensor could fit into the throat.

The R8/R9 were modular and they may be able to just redesign the module with the film rails to fit a bigger sensor, with perhaps a screw on film rail when you want to shoot film. It is all a moot point now that the R10 is supposed to be in development. Robert

WOW you mean all those who moaned and groaned about the death of the r and preached that poor mismanaged leica can't develope its on sensor are all wrong.. I have yet to read one post of apology and admission at how mistaken they were! ( I would love someone to prove me wrong and I will shut the f up) and if I had time I would dig up some of that gargage and repost it in a name and shame..because they do deserve it. Congrats Leica and the R team. Heroes I am sure they are far along and don't need any suggestions at this point.. I am not counting on it being a remake of the r9.. I think leica has shown us how far along they are from the r9.. "Save the mount, save the r"

"Save the mount, save the r" While I agree with the general context of your message, albeit maybe not the methods, the R10 isn't imminent. I think Leica said late 2009- early 2010 for the R10. There wasn't even a working prototype shown I don't believe (unless it was an unnofficial closed door meeting that's common at trade shows.) Nevertheless it's good news I presume for those waiting on a digital R body.

Rats? Charming! I'd say that the forum was extremely busy just a week ago, but that's just my opinion. Certainly on Monday, when there were more people logged on that EVER before, it was actually difficult to get access to the server at all. Seeing as how Dr Kaufmann said so only on Monday, I'd say it's pretty much assured that by this time next year, we will have an R10 to buy.
