This kicks so much ass...Leica announces the S2 AND an R10. Almost too much for one day.

I'm very happy for Leica. They've shown that they're going to be as relevant today and tomorrow as they were 100 years ago. Sure there are bound to be more hiccups along the way, but they are going to make this happen.

Congratulations, Leica! :)

Where is the R10 announcement? Do you mean the 'reference' to a potential R10, or is there any actual information about it?

There's been bits and pieces around throughout the day. It will come and it will be full-frame, support existing R glass as well as new AF-R lenses (not the S-lenses). And there will be more than one R camera.

Some think it will come AFTER sumemr 2009 when the S2 has gone into production, I think they are already preparing it and that it's in the pipeline right after the S2.

Apart from being busy with presenting the S2, I would imagine somebody in Leica HQ thought it would be a smart move not to present TOO many new things at Photokina. Just see how the magnificent new f/1.4 M-lenses has been overseen in the photography media.

But if what you were looking or was specifications and a model, a price and a release date. Then that wasn't today. But our doubts as is to if Leica will drop the R line or continue it was settled. They will make an even stronger R than we expected.

Wow.

Looks like the good Dr. Kaufmann has the last laugh after all. Notice how he is all :D in the one photo...

I wonder how many kajillion dollars the various pieces (S2 body & lenses) will sell for? With 37.5 megapixels and a 30x45mm sensor, this camera won't be, um, "economical..."

8th wonder of the world has just been revealed. everybody looks serious , except two girls.

i love girls. :D

Ah, yes - silly little girls.

One of life's great simple pleasures (good GAWD, I'm getting old...)

What? No comments on the very utilitarian looking Teutonic blonde lass??

  • FF x 1.5 format ???? Doesn't make sense to me. So, what will happen to all of the 35mm format lenses?
  • Auto focus? When did this happen in Leica history? Is the AF going to be as good as Nikon and Canon?

"Word on the street" (AKA Yahoo MUGers discussion group) is that the S2's Euro price is 20,000.00, which comes to $29,586.981 American.

Not too farfetched, given the prices of Hasselblad's top end digital MF cameras.

I'll stick to my MP, thanks. :D

Arthur - This is not the R10 (will come later) this is a new system and new format. :)

Cheers,

No it is a single point AF system. But it only has to be as good or better than what is on the other MF cameras.

This camera and the associated lenses (8!), the new fast M wides, and the Summarits are Steven Lee's products. Has canon or Nikon introduced sooo many products recently?

Well done to Dr. Kaufmann and the guys at Leica - thinking outside the box, they've really caused an earthquake here. If the camera delivers as promised, I can see photojournalists trading up, and fashion guys trading down. If you can't beat 'em, change the game :D

As an ardent M-man, I grudgingly have to admit that this is a much better move for the company than a new, full-frame M9. But that doesn't mean they should just forget about us (hint hint, hint hint :p )

Just impressive.

Leica is doing what other did not dare to do. Build a new camera/lens system for digital requirements only - add an amazing number of 9 new lenses to it this is not just major news, it is a major company effort that hopefully pays off. Even without the S2, the new lenses added to the M line ensure a wealth of first class lenses including extremely fast lenses for digital use. If rumors about the R10 are correct, even the R community is kept happy and alive.

Leica has more serious announcements to make than Canon and Nikon together, even including Hasselblad, Phase One and Leaf. I hope they can hold on to it.

Did we ever solve the M8 IR disaster without additional glass filters? Did we forget about the DMR announcement? How to keep the R community happy, without a DMR in place and no official news about the R10.

If Leica keeps this speed of innovation, I would expect the merger of the M with the R system based on a live view (EVIL) camera.
