Very impressive, indeed, could not only be the Canon-killer but also the Nikon-nerver...

Greetings

Ralf

Canon-killer? Nikon-nerver? I think a fresh look at Canon and Nikon's corporate financials is in order: in the latest reporting period Canon reported revenues of USD $42.5 billion (Canon Inc. (7751.T): Financial Statements - BusinessWeek) and Nikon's was USD $9.1 billion (NIKON CORP (NINOY.PK): Financial Statements - BusinessWeek.

Leica doesn't have the financial capital, human capital, or strategic alliances to put even a dent in these two market heavyweights. Canon and Nikon will continue to out-invest and out-innovate the second tier camera manufacturers (including giants like Sony). Those companies that are even lower down the food chain, such as Leica, will continue to hunt for high margin niches in a market landscape that is being reshaped dramatically every day.

"S2 will retail at around €20,000 [body only]"

Now put an ad for selling your house (before the price hits rock bottom) and buy a tent.;)

Fear not, just wait. Leica is going to serve everyone::p

"'We saw an opportunity,' Stefan Daniel continues. 'There was a very small window to get into the [high-end] DSLR market. We are first going to focus on the pro market before dropping the technology to other lower-priced DSLRs. Eventually we will launch models for amateurs and other pros. We've developed a technology platform and we will split it to the other systems. This is the logical step. This is a pro camera, but of course we will have something for everyone else. This is the commercialisation of what photographers are and have been looking for" - [ quoted from BJP online]

Amen.

I am happier 'than a pig in slop!'

I saw the high res' pictures a the British Journal of Photography - beautiful camera! The eyepiece is inviting - I want to look through it to see the new Leica vision!

I probably won't be able to swing the BIG cash for it - so I look forward to the R10. Have all Leica users finally been rewarded for all these LONG years of waiting?

Patience is indeed a virtue, and I for one am glad to have hung on, recorded images patiently, enjoyed it, yes, even been frustrated at times, but now the future is here!

I for one don't care about Canon or Nikon or how much money they make on throw away, new today, obsolete tomorrow cameras. See the positive and enjoy!!! Bring on the R10!!!!

The dual shutter is not available elsewhere.

The fastest leaf shutter lenses are the Rollei PQS lenses - 1/1000.

Dual shutter is available on all Hasselblad 200 series. I have a 203FE - it has flash synch up to 1/500 with leaf shutter, and (unsynched) top speed of focal plane shutter is 1/2000.

Wow. Very, very impressive. Let's hope they price it competitively.

Look at the size of that eyepiece...

And they sealed the body. Holy cow, I can't believe they did that.

Very, very impressive. Hats off to Leica on this one.

It's very impressive, but a big advantage with medium format to me is the digital back. You can use it on view cameras and when a new one comes around just change the back. You can also shoot film if wanted. Apart from this the S2 looks very impressive!

The integration in this camera is far better. Anyway, most of the money is in the lenses, so between the savings from making an integrated camera and the improved handling, I don't think that this is serious. It works for 35mm.

On the other hand, no announcements have been made. Let's see what Leica announces. Maybe there is something about the sensor setup in there...
