Overgaard Posted September 19, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I see that both M8 and Digilux 3 can take SDHC memory cards now. I would love if Leica could swing a little - belatedly I know - update for the Digilux 2 and perhaps DRM so that those two great cameras can use SDHC as well. Would be fantastic because non-SDHC cards are really rare above 2GB. Just in the spirit of Photokina, Christmas, M8.2 and all.

adan Posted September 19, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 19, 2008 Hmmm- shooting RAW with the D2, it would take 5.33 hours just to WRITE 4 Gigs worth of pictures. Shooting jpegs-fine, 4 Gigs holds 1500 pictures. Overkill?
dugby Posted September 19, 2008 Share #4 Posted September 19, 2008 Shooting jpegs-fine, 4 Gigs holds 1500 pictures. Overkill? Not really. I'm off to Cambodia-Vietnam soon, and want to travel light, cause it's so hot/humid and for me that's misery, so need to carry the least weight possible on daily excursions. So have decided to take my D2 only with no portable Vosonic Digital Storage. Last time I carried my L1 and Vosonic 80GB Digital Storage all over Tokyo-Paris-London (that combo is close on 1.5Kgs) So now am quickly trying to buy up lots of 2GB SD's for the D2, but...I've got a stack of SDHC's for my L1 that I can't use in the D2. Just bought a 16GB SDHC for the L1 that would be great for the D2....if only......

Thorsten, My current understanding is that some, but not all, cameras can, and have had, SDHC support enabled by way of a firmware update. Underneath, SDHC is more than just an increase in capacity over previous Secure Digital. There are specific aspects of the SD Specification 2.0 (SDHC) that are dependent on hardware requirements much like UDMA support, for Compact Flash cards, requires a supporting chipset and subsequent firmware to address it. If this circuity was not engineered into the camera during development, then no amount of firmware adjustments will be able to provide support for these cards. The Leica M8, because it was under development during a time after supporting SDHC chipsets were made available, always had dormant SDHC ability. All that was needed were the software instructions to awaken the features of the chipset. Unfortunately, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC1/Leica Digilux 2 was developed and produced long before SDHC was even most likely much of an engineering thought. BTW, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1/Leica Digilux 3 has always had SDHC card support from day one of its ship date. Also, even “non-SDHC cards...above 2GB” such as the "SD Compatible" Transcend 4GB 150x, model TS4GSD150, will not work in the Digilux 2, either, because the camera does not understand the required FAT32 format. However, this might be something that could be firmware addressable. Geoff myspace.com/geoffotos
