zonevt Posted September 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted September 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was shooting in the studio with my R9/DMR yesterday when it turned off. My first thought was that the battery was exhasted, so I tried two other batteries. The camera would boot up and then turn off. Once it turned off I would have to remove and insert the battery for it to boot again it would not work from the master switch. I charged all three of my batteries overnight...charger lights seem to work fine. When i insert the freshly charged batteries it boots the same as before and you can see the battery indicator only shows about a quarter charge and it shuts as soon ait boots.....not time to take an exposure or get to the main menue etc. If I hold the shutter realese down as it boots it will shoot several frames but once it finishes processing them it shuts down and no preview comes up. I have called Leica Service and they are calling me back tomorrow just wondering if any one else has had this happen and any information of this problem would be appreciated......Tom. robsteve Posted September 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted September 18, 2008 Tom: Try cleaning the contacts on the battery and inside the power winder. I noticed that if my battery contacts get dirty, just pressing on the battery with you palm would shut the camera down. Hopefully, your contacts are the problem, otherwise you need to check if the batteries are charging properly. Robert
jaapv Posted September 18, 2008 Share #3 Posted September 18, 2008 The same experience here. The thing went haywire - Eclipse 2 on the contacts solved the problem.
zonevt Posted September 18, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted September 18, 2008 Robert, thanks for your reply.....I took the DMR apart last night and cleaned all the contacts.......and still have the same problem......The charger seems to be working OK but will need to check the batteries with a tester to see if they are fully charging....Tom

I checked two batteries I have here that were charged a couple weeks ago and they show 8.23 and 8.24 volts. Robert
stuny Posted September 19, 2008 Share #6 Posted September 19, 2008 Tom - If that doesn't do it the R9 may need to visit Leica -- I had a toal failure towards the end of our Borneo trip -- It started with meter problems on my R8/DMR, and eventually would not start up with any of the three charged batteries. total cost (including some free work on the DMR) was about USD230. zonevt Posted September 19, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted September 19, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did clean the battery contacts also. I am starting to suspect the charger as even after charging fully when I try them in the camera it shuts down sooner and the shutter release will not work any more before it shuts down. I will need to get a tester and check the battery voltage tomorrow and if low I will buy a new charger before sending the DMR in for service. Thank you all for your advice, always appreciated.....Tom.
EH21 Posted September 19, 2008 Share #8 Posted September 19, 2008 I had a bad charger as well....

You didn't send it to Solms then...
zonevt Posted October 8, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted October 8, 2008 I received a replacement charger from Leica today, charged a battery and it now tested at about 8.4 volts and my R9/DMR now works again. My defective charger appeared to work properly but when tested the batteries were at 7.6 volts ( battery rated at 7.4 volts), apparently not enough to run the DMR properly. stuny Posted October 8, 2008 Share #11 Posted October 8, 2008 Andy - They did forward it to Solms, and it still came back with the low price a week before its promised date.
andybarton Posted October 8, 2008 Share #12 Posted October 8, 2008 So, how come they wanted to charge me $1,000 then, I wonder?
