Initially, he planned to buy the cheaper Panasonic version, but when he began checking prices he found that Leica is offering a $250 rebate on it, and last month he found a $100 rebate on it. He just ordered the Leica version. This offer might signal the camera’s replacement with a newer model. Regardless, less USD250 the price difference between the Panasonic and Leica versions is very reasonable when one considers the longer warrantee, bigger memory card, bundled software and Leica specified settings. Panasonic’s replacement for the DMC-FZ50 is the DMC-G1 and a Leica-labeled version of the latter is unlikely – so far, Leica has denied any intention of joining the Micro FourThirds standard. Doing a Leica version of a Panasonic product is simple enough, but it seems Leica doesn’t want to get involved with just another camera system. There are the M and R systems to take care of, and whatever AFRika will turn out to be, plus the D system (aka FourThirds) that’s been on the backburner for quite some time now.
