peter_n Posted September 18, 2008 Share #21 Posted September 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use Domke/Domke clones. Yes some velcro but I remove a lot of it. On a Domke F-2 you can remove it on the front pockets because they are covered by the outer flap. I leave the side pockets velcro'ed though because they are not so covered. I applied this to my F-802, F-803 and F-1X clones. About 75% of the velcro is unneccessary.

Kent10D Posted September 18, 2008 Share #22 Posted September 18, 2008 Down with Velcro! The work of the devil! Let me up the ante - is there anything in leather? Why in the world does every camera bag have to be made out of army surplus canvas? I was always under the impression that leather was a bad choice because it tends to breed fungus that can get into your lovely camera and lenses. Not a problem in a dry environment, but where I live leather articles routinely grow unidentifiable fuzz if not kept dry and aired out. Billingham plug: they have 'em in black, you know. They really are great bags for an M system.
wildlightphoto Posted September 18, 2008 Share #23 Posted September 18, 2008 I made my own. Detachable shoulder strap, adjustable waist strap, fully padded, pockets for flashlight, 100 APO, and back-to-back 1.4x & extension tube, space for 280 f/4 APO, 180 f/2.8 APO and a film body. Shoulder stock ties on outside, elastic loops for film inside, green camo color, top-loading with zipper, no velcro.
enboe Posted September 18, 2008 Share #24 Posted September 18, 2008 You may wish to consider the lovely products of Nigel Fogg and bee berman. Fogg Specialist Bags - photographic bags and camera cases Thanks.
dpattinson Posted September 18, 2008 Share #25 Posted September 18, 2008 I bought a black Billingham Airport Stowaway bag for this purpose M Billingham and Co Stowaways. It will (just) carry the M8 with any lens I own mounted (even the 28-35-50 tri-elmar) and a second (or two small lenses) lens in a wrap in the bottom of the bag. Zip pocket fits a spare battery and a few memory cards. It has room for a moleskine in the back pocket and pen in one of the side pockets, but does get a little stretched if you have the whole lot in there. (I tend to have the camera in hand most of the time, so not such a big deal for me). It's so much more compact than any other comparable bag that I have found. I've found it invaluable. I have a Hadley Pro with accessory pockets for when I need to carry a little more (lunch, waterbottle, umbrella, last two better kept outside the main compartment). I have never seen one of these Fogg Specialist Bags - Soprano, but it seems like a good alternative option.
NZDavid Posted September 18, 2008 Share #26 Posted September 18, 2008 One more to try: Redoxx - Quality Luggage in the Spirit of Adventure. These super-tough bags are made in Montana by a former parachute-maker. A good idea for travel. Products include travel pouches for cameras and accessories. ChrisC Posted September 18, 2008 Share #28 Posted September 18, 2008 ......I'm looking for a small bag to carry an M with a couple of lenses and then a pocket or two for pen and Moleskine and the like. Why not use your wife's handbag. It could save a lot of agonising. ............... Chris
Agent M10 Posted September 18, 2008 Author Share #29 Posted September 18, 2008 Doug's bag sounds too rip-roaring expensive for me.
bobtodrick Posted September 18, 2008 Share #30 Posted September 18, 2008 I favour the tan! I have a small Hadley for my Contax II that is the light tan, plus a large Hadley for my Digilux 3 kit. Wish I'd stuck with the tan...to me the tan looks better as it wears, whereas the black just looks dingy. But I too hate the velcro so common now. When I first purchased the Digilux I tried a Crumpler...I just didn't know if I wanted tor spring for another Billingham. But everytime I opened the Crumpler heads 10 feet away turned to see what the 'ripping' sound was. A real PITA.
Agent M10 Posted September 18, 2008 Author Share #31 Posted September 18, 2008 Chris, my wife's Coach bag carries a big bottle of water, a moleskine, wallet, legal files, an umbrella, two or three novels, two key rings, cellphone, sometimes a laptop, and probably enough for a three-day stay somewhere. I guess I could use it if I wanted to let go of the M and buy two Canon Mark 3's, a 70-200mm, various cordless flashheads, and a few primes. Bob, isn't that the irony though? Folks complain about the M8's shutter noise, but they are the same ones carrying around this dreadful velcro.
wstotler Posted September 18, 2008 Share #32 Posted September 18, 2008 Does anyone else think those tan/brown leather Billinghams look dreadful? After 10 years I'm sure they'd look ok, but new, yeuk. Funny to hear somebody say it--agreed. Out of the box the Artisan & Artist bags are beautiful. To each his own. Agreed that Velcro generally sucks for looks, is overused, and is loud. Thanks, Will
stavros_polyviou Posted September 19, 2008 Share #33 Posted September 19, 2008 I opted for the Billingham Hadley Pro and Hadley Digital specifically because Billingham seems to be the only brand that uses absolutely zero velcro in their bags. Seems a bit silly to use a quiet-shutter Leica, yet tolerate the sound of velcro as you try to discreetly change lenses :-) I selected the chaki/tan versions for several reasons. I thought the black versions would show dust a lot more. I use black camera bags all the time and they always seem to be dirty. I wanted a bag that I could carry with me everywhere, even when I was wearing my Sunday best. The chaki/tan combination actually goes quite well with any color combination I might be wearing, even when I'm wearing black head to toe. I know it seems silly, but if I wanted to feel like a tourist or the hired photographer for the evening every time I took my camera along at a friend's party I would stick to my Lowepro bags. I also considered the sage version, but I personally would have preferred it with black leather trim rather than tan. Beyond my fashion-consciousness, the bags offer protection from the elements whilst not being too bulky or heavy. They are quiet, and their style/feel matches that of my most magnificent meterless Ms :-) Just my 2 cents.
stevelap Posted September 19, 2008 Share #34 Posted September 19, 2008 Get a black one and you'll never look back. I too thought the tan were awful old man looking but the all black are really nice (I have both a small Hadley and a 335). Another vote for the Billingham Hadley in black, three styles (original, pro and digital) three sizes (small, medium, large) and two materials (canvas or FibreNyte). A velcro free zone and you don't need to unbuckle the straps, they have a quick release stud.
antistatic Posted September 19, 2008 Share #35 Posted September 19, 2008 Love my Artisan & Artist. No velcro, black and well built. David
mooky Posted September 19, 2008 Share #36 Posted September 19, 2008 I use to design some Expedition quality gear (not camera bags though) and as much as I don't like velcro, I also don't like leather with buckles either, although it's esthetically pleasing. Zippers still provide the most 'content security' and you won't lose or have items fall out of a zippered compartment - next to that - Fastex closures work well and can usually be managed while 'on the go'. Zippers however, are more costly to put on products but for security while traveling I prefer zippers and Fastex closures. Everyone has different needs, and designs can only come close to matching them. I always look for quality first, then features. (oh, 'Domke wraps' are great) Too, if you use bags with snaps, buckles, and to a lesser extent, velcro, you will find your gear with more dust on them. It's important to take the time to clean out the 'open style pockets' to minimize dirt and dust from building up in them.
Agent M10 Posted September 19, 2008 Author Share #37 Posted September 19, 2008 And the winner is . . . Artist and Artisan. Bought the Walker bag - black, leather with zippers. In the bag search, found Kata. No velcro or canvas - at least on the backpack I bought. Best backpack I've seen. On to eBay with the Tamrac, Domke, Crumpler, and the rest. alifie Posted September 19, 2008 Share #38 Posted September 19, 2008 A while ago I found this bag, an Antler 'large video' or similar name in Dixons (or Currys). It will fit an M with shortish lens and another lens with side pockets that take two rolls of film each and a larger front pocket. Made of leather and the only velco is on the divider and side pockets. I think it was about 12 quid, so good I got another. Welcome, dear visitor! alifie Posted September 19, 2008 Share #39 Posted September 19, 2008 Lens with side pockets? Also it has a handle on the top (the bag not the lens).
elansprint72 Posted September 19, 2008 Share #40 Posted September 19, 2008 Black in town. Brown in the country. Oh, hang on... that's shoes, isn't it? Except on Friday, when a Gentleman may dress as he pleases, or so they told me at school. One is frightfully glad that you did not plump for the Barbour; one would not wish them to become too common.
