Advertisement Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here Official Leica photokina Announcements.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
leicar888 Posted September 19, 2008 Share #62 Posted September 19, 2008 Numerous times recently, while out capturing film images with my M6 TTL and my R8, I have noticed many, many people using Panasonic digital cameras with their built-in Leica lenses. Apparently, camera store employees are smartly recommending the Panasonic cameras because of the quality of Leica optics. Nevertheless, the following report in the British press last week reflects a change: Leica's global sales fell 38% for the three months to June 30, 2008 compared to the same quarter last year, though sales of the M8 camera are holding up in the UK. "The strong decline is due to reduced sales of the M-system and of digital compact cameras, resulting from delays in the introduction of new products," states Leica Camera AG. Leica recorded a net loss of 3,850,000 Euros, partly caused by a 35% rise in research and development spending. However, sales of the M8 digital rangefinder are holding up in the UK thanks to a 400 Euros trade-up promotion, said Leica Camera Ltd's managing director David Bell. He believes that M8 sales have been helped by photographers seeking a 'smaller and lighter' alternative to a professional DSLR. Let's hope that Photokina helps to change the 38% sales decrease into something more positive. Although I primarily shoot black and white film and still love working in my darkroom, I wouldn't mind being able to attach my vast array of R lenses to an affordable Leica digital R body and occasionally capture images digitally (thus not the horribly expensive previous R digital back that I chose not to buy and could not afford), but film will be my capturing basis for years to come. Apparently, camera store employees are smartly recommending the Panasonic cameras because of the quality of Leica optics..... Me too noticed this, walking through some media/electronics store... problem is that Panasonic sales, even with Leica-branded lenses, don't give a dime to Leica Co., I think... the lenses, of course, don't come out of Leica factory (and, maybe, neither their designs), and I doubt that their agreement provides for a sort of royalty on any Panasonic camera with Leica lens that is sold... Riiiiight, at the big-box stores where 99% of p&s digitals are bought, the college kids working part-time as sales people have heard of Leica, as have their customers. Riiiight... I would be ASTOUNDED if "...99% of P&S digitals are bought in "big box stores"... I think you will find that no one type of outlet has such a dominant market position, and if anything, sales from web outlets are the prime source of such tinker toys. Please don't dispense meaningless statistics. Regards, Bill

Maybe the original poster asked some of the people using the cameras why they bought that model. Maybe he's not in the States - for all their faults, stores in the UK tend to employ permanent members of staff, not part time students.

SJP Posted September 19, 2008 Share #68 Posted September 19, 2008 Two people I know recently bought a Panasonic because of Leica (designed) glass, at least that is what they told me. They are 40-50 years age range. They do not know that I have an M8 so that was not a factor. So yes the Leica brand still has some street credibility - and justly so. marknorton Posted September 19, 2008 Share #69 Posted September 19, 2008 So, is that all there is? A few days from Photokina and we've seen a warmed-over M8, 4 interesting lenses plus a handful of accessories. A digital projector and two compacts, even if the zoom range of the bigger one is a bit disappointing. All good stuff, though the damp firework of the Digilux 3 appears to have fizzled out and the V-Lux 1 has run its course. What else? Nothing about the R, no direction still less product. Medium format? As the little old lady used to say in the Wendy's advert, "Where's the Beef?"

Iron Flatline Posted September 22, 2008 Share #75 Posted September 22, 2008 I'm sitting here, bummed that I had to cancel my trip to tonight's presentation - I was invited, but business requires that I appear at a different event in Berlin. I'm actually sitting here with a glass of wine, following Andreas' reports. I canNOT believe how slow the site is right now

earleygallery Posted September 22, 2008 Share #78 Posted September 22, 2008 Why isn't there more response to the announcements? S2 - this is a totally new camera? R10 is in addition to the S2? I'm confused. More questions than answers so far.

Commenting on Andreas' posts, the S2 sounds like a major step forward and I have a sense of relief that the R line remains operational
