If you dropped it all functions will have to be checked and adjusted, so CLA seems reasonable.

Upgrade to current standard is a kind of catch-all phrase which includes the replacement of some electronic parts which are prone to go out of spec, and software updates etc. It seems to be a standard item on all repair estimates of digital cameras in my experience.

The estimate appears to be fair. I would go for it. You will get an as-new camera.

The phrase "Upgrade to current standard" means absolutely nothing most of the time. It is just something they put on every repair estimate letter they send out.

I've sent back both of my M8's in the last 2+ months and on each repair estimate letter I received that phrase was included. They did nothing at all to my black M8. The rangefinder was still off in the vertivle direction when it came back and the griptac covering was never removed. Not only did they NOT remove the griptac covering but they NEVER took the red dot off. I had mrked it before I sent it in. So they certainly never adjusted the vertical alignment. I adjusted it myself.

On the chrome M8 they fixed the switch problem but sent it back with the rengefinder vertical alignment off by about 3 inches, it varied depending on the distance you were focusing at.

As far as the cost estimate there isn't much you can do, IF you want your camera fixed. Leica is the only game in town for your repairs.

"Upgrade to current standard," as others have said, means that there were changes made after your camera was made.

For example, early M5s had a different shutter mechanism (I think it was) from later ones. If you today send in an M5 that didn't have the improved shutter roller, you'll get an "Upgrade to current standard" item on the estimate.

First, it's a catchall. On the M5 it refers to a shutter change; on the M8 it refers to changing out T2 and some other parts. It's a summary that says you'll get a camera to the spec of the latest production series.

Second, it's part of the repair. They won't restore the camera to its original state, because there's an improved version available, and that's the one you'll get back.

Leica repairs are expensive. If you're using the Digilux 2 and like its feel and performance, get the work done.

$750.00

FWIW, Popflash has been selling Leica USA refurbished Digilux 2s, complete with a one-year Leica USA guarantee, for $677. Although their site doesn't list any for sale currently, if it was me, before I sent Leica $750 to repair a damaged camera, I'd first check with him to see if he has access to any more of these.

for $750 you can get a rebuilt D2 with a 1 year warranty, on the internet.

(I saw maybe 6 of them a few weeks ago at KEH in Atlanta,GA,USA).

Mine is in for sensor replacement (free) and repair due to me dropping it and denting the top plate and focusing ring ($187).

$750 is a bunch of money ..... GREAT camera .... but you can keep that one AND get a rebuilt one for that cost. If it works at all .... think about it.

regards,
