sharookh Posted August 24, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like to know more about the universal viewfinder Leica offers. Is there a site I can get details? What do the framelines look like? Can one focus and meter through the viewfinder? Does one mentally factor the 1.33 multiplier for the M8? Lots of questions.........! Thanks
Advertisement Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Hi sharookh, Take a look here Viewfinder question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted August 24, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 24, 2008 I don't have one so I can't comment on the frame lines but you won't be able to focus or meter through it because there's no rangefinder or meter coupling. Yes, you'd need to mentally compensate for the M8's sensor so a 21mm lens on the M8 would give the same field of view as seen through a 28mm external viewfinder. Pete. razerx Posted August 25, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 25, 2008 Are you referring to the huge 16mm to 28mm finder affectionately known as the Frankenfinder? If you are using the WATE on an M7 for example at 16mm then you dial in "16mm" on the finder and the appropriate framelines will show. But if you are using the WATE on an M8 then the 16mm would become a 21mm because of the 1.33x crop so there for you will dial in "21mm" on the finder. marknorton Posted August 25, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 25, 2008 The viewfinder is for viewing only - the normal viewfinder is used for metering and focussing. That's the way it's always been with the auxiliary finders. There's no coupling at all between the camera and the lens, it's quite easy, with a WATE, to set the lens to one focal length, the IR menu to a second and the viewfinder to a third. The FF also allows you to adjust for parallax at close focussing but I seldom use it. The Frankenfinder is brighter than the main finder but exhibits significant barrel distortion, so the frames lines are barrelled as well. The FF also has a spirit level which helps you hold the camera vertically. On the M8, as the previous poster mentioned, only 3 out of the available 5 frames are usable at the moment with Leica lenses because Leica does not make the 12 and 14mm lenses which would be required to give the angle of view. If we get a full-frame camera at some point, it will then behave as on an M7 and all 5 frames will be used with focal lengths as marked. However, the FF should fall out of use because the M9 will have a variable magnification finder with electronic framelines, WON'T IT LEICA?
