Difference in processing Capture One and One PRO?

Just wondering if anyone noticed if the Capture One PRO processes differently than the Capture One.

Just downloaded the PRO today and had some really disappointing results in processing of DMR shots.

And aside from that, I like the Capture One interface better.

But I like even better the results from FlexColor of all the RAW converter's I've tried (I use lightroom to preview photos; then export JPG's from Lightroom of the selected one, and then make TIFFs from FlexColor of those selected DNGs as well; and in the end I decide image per image, which conversion I will use (which is FlexColor in 70% of the cases)).

I was just thinking the Capture One would be the proper one to do the Lightroom stuff - but now I'm far from sure about that!

Any experience, anybody?

Here's a crop of the conversion in Capture One PRO. The tone just look like a scan that went wrong. Just for fun here is Capture One PRO (no text), PS CS3 and FlexColor:

overgaardcom,

The latest ver. of Phase One does not yet have a Pro ver. released. You must be using 3.7 Pro, I assume. The current Phase One release is ver 4.1, but still waiting for pro (later this year!?). If you have a licence for 3.7 I believe you can use that to validate 4.1 free which some of us believe is an excellent RAW converter, quite different from it's predecessor 3.7. May be worth a try.

Edit: I just checked the P1 website. It appears to down for maintenance.

erl is quite correct regarding C1 v 3.7. I use C1 v 4, partcularly if I need to batch process many images at one session.

However, I also use Flexcolor for my special "one off "DMR images and the colour accuracy is just great especially for bringing out detail in bright reds. Much better in my view than C1 v 4 but the interface is a bit clunky to use. Lightroom v 2.0 is also OK and I use that for processing my LC1(D2) raw images. I rarely use it for processing DMR images.

So, it's a bit like using camera's, some are better than others for doing specific jobs.

Thorsten, did you adjust your colour temperature? DMR images always appear too warm in 3.7 and 4 (for that matter..) at first, you would need to correct for that prior to processing.

What Conrad said. Also, you guys know you can use the FlexColor DMR profiles in C1, right? :) I would also strongly suggest you try the other Phase (Kodak sensor) profiles in C1 pro (or C1 V4 for that matter, which is what I'm using these days). You might be very surprised, especially around skin tones.

Having said that, I like FlexColor too but what a PITA to use ;)

Thanks. The version 3.7 versus 4.1 make sense. The PRO looks old, interface-wise, too.

The FlexColor is just perfect, for conversion alone. But that is it.

For real fast work, I export out of Lightroom and I will buy the C1 4.1 for that purpose as well because I believe in it. I was just about to buy it yesterday when I discovered I could try the PRO edition. So I did and will test that color temperature as well (the feature of being able to batch process different sizes and file types in one go made good sense, and that can only be done in the PRO version).

But exporting out of Lightroom or C1 all of the selected files - and then do all the same files again out of FlexColor might not be such a bad idea; then being able to decide which is the best on each individual picture. Some are just fine that way, some others one can decide which one is best suited for tweaking in PS.

But I WOULD love if there was just ONE way to to it, and it was perfect and fast!

Jamie, I'll try that profile thing. Could you describe just exactly how that's done (sounds like picking a profile from one folder and using it in C1?).

That's it--you find the FlexColor ICC profiles and use them ;) There are (or used to be; I haven't done a clean install of FlexColor in awhile) two DMR profiles; the "original" one and the newly improved (last year?) profile.

Same goes for the Phase Profiles. I strongly suggest you have a look at the P21plus profiles with the DMR. Skin tones just snap into place and, as a very nice side effect, greens are not too yellow either :)

Here's by the way the final edition I decided to use in the magazine. Having looked in detail at the different ones, I might have opened up the shadow details a bit. But anyhow. Done is done. But what a great tool DMR is, and hopefully we can use it for a long time or some guy will find a way to upgrade it to a 50 MP full frame sensor ;-)

Portrait looks great, Thorsten.

I just bought a DMR this morning, and still need to buy a R camera and one or two primes....

I looked at your site during the last days, while making up my mind - really like your work.

What lense did you use on this portrait? 35mm?

Regards,

Peter
