analoguser Posted August 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is anybody aware of any repair service available who would attempt to polish the lens from a 28 mm f5.6 Summaron lens (s:confused: crewmount of course) I have a lens which is in mint condition cosmetically with the exeption that the glass itself is marred. I have been told that the lens elements are too small to be worked on safely. analog user
Advertisement Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Hi analoguser, Take a look here 28mm F 5.6 Summaron. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ronazle Posted August 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 18, 2008 HI, I had (have) a F:5.6 Summaron which had a fair amount of internal fogging. Most repair people shy away from the small elements, but Ms. Krauter at Golden Touch did a commendable job of CLAing it. If, in fact, the surfaces need work (i.e. polishing and coating) John, the owner of Focal Point might do it if he needs the work (unlikely) and has some one-time ulterior motive for taking apart the lens - he normally won't do it due to the size of the elements. He is the only person I know of who professionally re-coats lenses. Perhaps there is someone in Japan or Europe who will do it? Sorry I'm not more helpful - the lens is a really neat one. Good luck, Ron
doubice Posted August 19, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 19, 2008 Yes, John van Stelten of Focal Point seems to be the only one in the US capable of polishing and re-coating lenses. How willing he would be to tackle the tiny optics of the 28mm Summaron is however questionable. Best would be to contact him, he's pretty good in responding to emails. Best, Jan

normclarke Posted August 20, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2008 Malcolm Taylor may be worth a try. Google for details. Cheers, normclarke
analoguser Posted August 21, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted August 21, 2008 I would like to direct this to "normclark. " I googled Malcom Taylor as you suggested and found this website (http://www.ukcamera.com/collect/index.htm) and emailed them. I got the following reply: Thank you for your email. I'm Andrew Novis, there's no Mr. Taylor working here. The elements can be polished up to remove the scratches but it is a very expensive job, each element that needs polishing is £90.00 per side. It's normally only one side that needs cleaning but it's still an expensive job. The company I use can also make new elements if they are to badly damaged. Best regards Andrew Novis LLAMAS Photographic Services 8 Arran Close Hailsham East Sussex BN27 3DZ (01323) 846423 Since you are from the U.K. I wonder if you have ever heard of them? If you have, do they have a reputation for good work? I have never heard of a company that claims that they can actually replace an element from a vintage Leica lens.
