bussta Posted August 8, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have already got a D-Lux3 which I have enjoyed, but to be honest I haven't really used that much, but for some reason I am transfixed by the Digilux 2. I am considering selling the D-Lux3 to get a D2 is this a mistake? The main pull of the Digilux 2 for me is the full manual features much like an old Pentax K1000. I love it's retro look and the thought of setting the aperture, shutter & focus manually. I'd love more than anything an M8 but i can't justify spending £3,000 on it. I am a bit of a pixel peeper, but would I notice a great image quality difference between the D2 & my current D-Lux3? I understand that the D-Lux3 has the 16:9 ratio etc, but there is just something about the Digilux 2 that is pulling me in.............am I mad? Advertisement Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 Hi bussta, Take a look here Am I mad selling my D-Lux3 for a Digilux 2??. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted August 8, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 8, 2008 Busta, of course you're not mad. Just search for one of many threads extolling the virtues of the D2. Everyone will agree with your main reasons for wanting a D2. I cannot compare because I don't have a D Lux 3 but my 10mp Ricoh GX100 has twice the resolution and in big pictures it does show. But its handling is far inferior to the D2. We would all like a D2 with a 10mp sensor but we cannot be confident that Leica will meet our dream. It really depends on the maximum size images you regularly produce. Up to 10x8 inches the D2 more than holds its own.
bussta Posted August 8, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted August 8, 2008 Thanks for the reply, I wonder if it will be worth waiting to see what Leica announce at Photonika, my dream would be a bigger pixel version of the digilux 2, but I doubt it will ever happen, the LX4 looks promising, but no optical view finder make it feel more compact camera rather than the hands on feel I would get with the digilux 2. I just wish the digilux 2 had that little bit extra resolution, but then again people say 10x8 prints are superb with it??
Bob Ross Posted August 8, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 8, 2008 If Leica gets into the MIcro 4/3rds game, the result could be a evolved Digilux 2, one where you can change lenses. Bob
farnz Posted August 8, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 8, 2008 Bussta, I have 3 things to say to you: 1. Buy the D2 2. Buy the D2 3. Buy the D2 I have a D2 and a D-Lux 2 and while they're both great cameras the D2 would be with me on the desert island. You're right about the satisfying manual feel but the Vario-Summicron lens produces superb results and the camera is completely silent. Sure, the camera has its quirks (don't they all?) but it will quietly find its way into your heart. Pete.
audidudi Posted August 8, 2008 Share #6 Posted August 8, 2008 I am considering selling the D-Lux3 to get a D2 is this a mistake? Assuming you have the room to carry it around (as the D2 is quite a bit larger than the D-Lux3), the improvements in image quality are worth it. FWIW, I replaced my DMC-LX1 (the D-Lux2's Panasonic twin) with a D2 as my everyday carry camera (although I did take a brief detour via Sigma's DP-1 until I accidentally destroyed it ... oops!) and have no regrets despite its additional bulk and weight. The difference in form-factor sealed the deal for me, as I grew up in the late '70s and cut my teeth on cameras that are focused and adjusted manually. Make sure you can live with the viewfinder before you buy. And if you do buy, make sure it's had its sensor changed.
calshot Posted August 9, 2008 Share #10 Posted August 9, 2008 The Digilux 2/LC1 is a jolly good tool. But I wouldn't do anything about changes this close to Photokina.Lets be patient and hopefull. Rob
Bob Ross Posted August 9, 2008 Share #11 Posted August 9, 2008 They won't. I could believe you, Andy...but I wont:D I could rephrase my remark leaving Leica out and say that maybe Panasonic (the lead in the MFT JV) could make a followup on their LC-1 and you'd get a Digilux-2 look-a-like with an interchangeable Leica lens. I do think that Leica is "in" MFT, but maybe only for the lenses (design, royalties, brand license as a vender?) and wont do a rebadge until its popilarity is extablished. We'll see. Ruhayat Posted August 9, 2008 Share #16 Posted August 9, 2008 Bussta, no, you're not mad. I have and like both cameras, but between the two I much, much prefer the Digilux 2 because of the mechanical manual controls and more Leica-like image quality. I use the Digilux 2 primarily as a B&W digital camera as a companion to my new Zeiss Ikon film one, and the JPEGs out of the camera are superb. However, I prefer the colour images out of the D-Lux 3. I would characterise the D-Lux 3 as being more "SLR-like", in terms of the look of the images it produces. I personally don't consider it a street or documentary/journalistic camera -- I used it more for taking "pretty pictures". But it's too fiddly to use, which is why I am selling it off and buying a second-hand Nikon D80 for commercial use (I'm a graphics designer). The Digilux 2, though, you'd have to pry off my dead hands.

audidudi Posted August 9, 2008 Share #19 Posted August 9, 2008 that's a really nice bag! What is it? It's from Hartmann's "Belting Leather" collection but, alas, it has been discontinued for a few years now. However, there is a used one on eBay right now, as well as a ballistic nylon version. audidudi Posted August 9, 2008 Share #20 Posted August 9, 2008 It is not completely silent - it has a very slight creaky sound. I think it is the diaphragm. You are correct: The barely audible "click" is from the diaphragm / lens aperture, which also does double-duty as the shutter.
