Leica Leather Case from 1929

I am trying to figure out if the case in the attached photograph of the Soviet writer Sergei Tretiakov is for a Leica. The photograph is dated to Summer 1929.

When he was arrested in 1937, the police inventory included a Leica with a serial number of 50167 (Model I, produced in 1930).

If anyone can provide any leads on original leather cases, that would be appreciated.

Really looks an original, with the strap that goes also on the bottom of the case... pity the pic is not as good to reveal the possible Leica engravure on the front...

In my opinion the case seems of the type rather high to accomodate the camera with RF mounted on, but I can be wrong; all the cases of that kind had codes starting with E... maybe this could be a ESMOS, or ESNEL... clearly it's a case fit for retractable lenses Elmar/Hektor/Summar.

Thanks for the rapid responses.

Any chance you might know where I can find a reproduction of the original case?

Maybe it's easier to find an original one... they are not so rare... give for instance a look here:

under items with Exxxx codes... (probably not exactly the item of the pic... but very similar...)

I checked the above site for is quick to navigate into... but in Europe there are other net dealers that can have such oldtime accessories.

  • 1 month later...

The oldest of the 50-plus different Leica ever-ready cases I own for screw-mount Leicas in my "Fontenelle collection", is precisely the very first one ever offered by Leitz. Sorry, no time now, but tomorrow morning, I'll post some photos and details.

Hi !

Here are the complementary details of the early Leica ever-ready case, as promised yesterday:

I have discovered a Leica advertisement introducing this first ERC, either in one of the Vith or Emmermann volumes dating 1929 or 1930 (sorry, I couldn't find the copy right now). Before that, there was only the ETRIN carrying case for the Leica I with telemeter and twin cassette holder.

In an article in Viewfinder (Vol.24, nº1), Fred Diehl illustrates the same ERC and gives it the codeword ETTOP (Leitz catalogue for 1931).

I took some photos of "my" ETTOP yesterday evening (with my Digilux 2), and attach same here.
