I'm really sorry not to be able to go; the pipe smoking competition is usually quite a nail-biter; the vintage tractors should be good, two entries (neither of them vintage).

Rather frustratingly there is no mention of crabs. :(

Anyone around on Thursday 20th November could do worse than visit the World's Biggest Liar contest (ticket only).

Reminds me of "I'm a dolphin trainer" chat-up line.

Been a few years since I've used that one though.

Bet you can't imagine me telling porkies ?

Small world, I'm from Atherton. I'd be careful what you say about Wigan, there could be some pie eaters here who'd take offence.

Smaller than you think Steve. I'm actually from Atherleigh, roughly half way between Atherton and Leigh. (On Leigh Road; on the Leigh side of the old LUT bus garage.)

Look forward to meeting you if the Lake District Trip comes off.

Egremont, Gateway to Oblivion

How apt.

That's the last time we let you suggest somewhere Taylor. A verruca would be more interesting than the crab fair. Andy left early after making some comment about going to see a hill. Sensible chap. The best thing I can think of to say is that at least it didn't rain.

There were people lining the streets waiting for something to happen. It didn't. Eventually they drifted off to get drunk and/or look for the attractive sheep in the flock - or whatever they do in the countryside to pass the time.

Perhaps that is the purpose of the Crab Fair - lining the streets expecting nothing to happen,

Bet their ancestors have been doing that since 1237 AD - no surprises in Egremont. ;)

Best part of the day was when the village idiot waved goodbye to us, as we arrived.

It is quite close to the Sellafield Nuclear Power Station. Some would say much too close.

Saw a lot of 'gurning' going on, but it didn't seem organised. There was no World Gurning Championship taking place though. Everyone was a winner.

The only fashion that's reached the town since the war is the track suit. That's the Crimea War I refer to.

Obviously a Royalist town as I noticed one established still has the Coronation decorations hanging from the eaves.

Rolo

(They'll cheer when I return, but unless I can lift my coffin lid, i'll not hear).
