I was first very happy with the news of a D3 and imidiatly preorderd one, but the longer i think of it, i don't want a second reflex, i have a canon 5D and that works very well for me, so i think a D3 can never compeet with the 5D.

I never had an M camera but it could be the camera i'm looking for. just a bit afraid for fast scharpening,

In meanwhile i cancelled my order for D3, and wait for some results.

Ronny I believe, gauging by the Subject description that you are an existing D2 owner (or potential owner?)

I too think at the moment the next step for me as a D2 owner, is also to go to a M8. The price of a suitable M8/lens combo is not really an issue. (I can afford a R9/DMR/Vario)

But I will unlikely ever step into an R9/DMR/Vario, because of the bulk and weight.

However what is really an issue is finding a suitable M lens to meet my needs.

I'm well past the age of carrying and swapping multiple prime lens. Plus I hate the thought of dust getting into the light chamber.

Given how the M8 determines the Focal length of the attached lens and changes the frame guide lines, I wonder whether Leica could have adapted the M8 to be able to take the next step from up from a Tri-Elmar, to a accomodate a Vario lens of some type.

Maybe this is against the fundamentals of M users ?

35+ years ago I used to run around with a 35mm lensed Rangefinder......

The M8 offers the promise of an extremely high quality sensor in a compact body......but I'd love to get a Vario onto it, something like the equivalent to the D2's Summicron 28-90.

Or I wonder if Leica could develop a Bi-Summicron for an M8, with focal lengths about 21mm and 63mm. This could be useful..... many users could probabably live with just two focal lengths, of wide, and semi-telephoto, from one fast lens .

Now this combo would turn many a Leicaphile's head....

I am debt-averse so unless some kind relative leaves me a legacy or I win the lottery, regrettably I (and I presume that I am not alone in this) will never be able to afford an M8 + lens(es),

I may be able to afford a D3 sometime in the future, but only a) if the picture quality is comparable to my D2, and B) to increase the range of focal lengths available to me.

My point is a mix between Brian and Dugby.

I'm a LC1 owner and look for a replacement, but :

- I don't want another DSLR (D3)

- M8 is too expensive (even if I may afford it on several years - lenses are expensive) but this is not the main problem...

I had never use an M, and I think difficult for me now to leave the electronic view finder :

Not that I really like it (the image is really bad, and it's slow), but I love the live histogram and mainly use it for setting exposure now.

Going to the M8 (and loosing this live info) will be like going backward in a sense...

On the other side, I'm still disappointed by the sensor of the LC1 :-(

On solution I'm thinking of is the Sony R1, but it's big and unbalanced and slow :-(

May be a Sony R2 in the future ?

Indeed i am a D2 owner, for more than 2 years now, and i love that camera.

I first was happy with the news or a 4/3 sensor, but i want something different from DSRL.

A M8 is ofcaurse the dubble in prise, and i don't know with wath lens i should use it?

The Vario elmar is only f4, for that camera you don't carry a flash all time, so i think of a

24 or 28 f2 max f2.8??

I agree entirely with Christophe.

For me, the whole point of an SLR is the versatility to tackle almost every photographic situation. That means it should be capable of accepting a wide range of accessories and compared to a Nikon D200 and 18-200 VR zoom lens, as an equivalently priced alternative, the L1/D3 is starting a very long way back however much the Leica-designed lens brings to the party.

Rangefinder photography is a different beast entirely, a different approach, a different way of seeing the world. I think there's a great deal to be had by buying an R-D1 if you cannot afford an M8. The R-D1 is far more Leica-like in the way it feels and handles than any of the Leica P&S cameras, even the D2 which is my P&S camera.

Lots of lenses available, start with a secondhand 35mm Summicron or the new 28mm Elmarit and move on from there. Secondhand M8s will be available in time but the prices will be more related to other digital rangefinders at the time than to general digital cameras.

I've thought about an RD-1 - but there not a lot of them about and have you seen the eBay prices as a result?

Currently there's 4 - 1 on a buy it Now @ £1200, 2 from an Italian sources at approx £1350, and one from US that looks a bit dodgy as it starts at only £10, no reserve and requires one to email the seller before bidding - a definite no-no.

One can get an M or R series for less.
