roguewave Posted July 22, 2008 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Are there any medium format cameras that can use the Leica R glass without a substantial crop factor? I know this sounds strange, but just asking.
Advertisement Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Hi roguewave, Take a look here R glass with Medium Format Cameras. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted July 22, 2008 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2008 The register distance of medium format cameras is longer than that of the Leica R ( or any 135 camera for that matter),so I think not if you want to reach infinity.
luigi bertolotti Posted July 22, 2008 Share #3 Posted July 22, 2008 Regarding the R lenses, there is the basic issue of "neg-to-lens flange" distance quoted by Jaap... just for the record, there are some old Visoflex lenses that can cover a 6x6 format at standard distances (the Telyt 200 f4, the Hektor 125 f 2,5, even the Elmar 135, I think). thomas_schertel Posted July 22, 2008 Share #4 Posted July 22, 2008 the old Hektor 135 mm covers 9x12 cm². I can use it with my Mentor camera. Jours sincerely Thomas
giordano Posted July 23, 2008 Share #5 Posted July 23, 2008 Flange distance shouldn't be a problem with at least some of the medium format technical cameras (e.g. Linhof M679cs with wide angle bellows, maybe Technika 70 and Plaubel Peco Junior). But coverage will be.
zapp Posted July 23, 2008 Share #6 Posted July 23, 2008 A camera with a mirror box will not work. A camera without shutter will not work The image format must fit in the 24x36 image circle of approximately 42 mm diameter.

I forgot so say that even if all requirements for the camera are met, you still need some kind of adapter-plate for place the lens infront of the camera. Btw. it makes no sense to mount medium format lenses to 35mm cameras (lenses are worse than 35mm lenses) and it does not make sense to mount 35mm lenses to medium format cameras because the image circle is too small as well as all of the above apply. roguewave Posted July 23, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted July 23, 2008 Gentleman, thanks for th education. I'm interested in getting a medium format camera again. I had a Blad years ago & still have my Ikoflex. I'm too old to use a waist level camera (my eyes). I'm searching for something that allows me to use it for street work. I have become addicted to the Leica glass and really don't want to compromise in that regard. Thanks again for your time and comments.
Dan States Posted July 23, 2008 Share #10 Posted July 23, 2008 Ben, prices for used Hasselblads are so low you can get a 501 with prism finder, two lenses and two backs for less than the price of one new Leica lens. Best wishes Dan
harrisfoto Posted July 27, 2008 Share #11 Posted July 27, 2008 Also, it is much easier to go the other way. Use the Hasselblad lenses on a Leica R, or other DSLR. There are a number of adapters for this. A Leica R Digital back or an Canon 5D are less than a medium format digital back. Also, let's see what happens with a new digital R10.
