Haiti Photo Trip

I'd never go there in my life.

Crazy people, all kinds of illnesses. Dead corpses on the streets... No way!

Many people warned me about Haiti. Even haitians don't want to go there even if you pay them so this says a lot. If you like the thought of being kidnapped or stabbed for no reasons, then you'll have a great trip.

Good luck.

Hmmmm....

Informed view:

I photographed Haiti for more than 20 years. Please send me a PM if you would like specific info.

Cheers,

Peter, I'd drop Conrad a PM if I were you. ;) Enjoy your trip, and let us see some of the results.

Bill,

You're too funny.

You are the most uninformed person in this thread. Just so you know.

Here in Montreal we have the largest Haitian community in the world, just after Haiti itself. I happen to know quite a few of them. I will not go deeper into this topic, but I will tell you it is not uncomon to walk by mountains of dead bodies with kids playing on top of them in many places in Haiti. This, is not only a first-hand source information. It is something we read in the papers as well as hear on the local Haitian community Radio.

Bill, you're funny.

Ned, like you, I have never been to Haiti.

But unlike you, I don't make sweeping generalisations about a country without first-hand experience. Peter asked for advice. You offered hearsay.

Bill

No bill. Please don't try to sound like you know something on the topic. All you've done is attacked me (as always, you're trying) but the fact is, you have no idea but you try to sound like you have one.

You do NOT know what I know. You do NOT know me. If and when I choose to speak on a subject, it is because I know. Otherwise, I read and learn.

I gain nothing by proving anything to you. In fact, I do NOT want to prove anything to you. On the Haitian matter, I have deep understanding and experience. Too bad you just chose to make fun instead of asking and learning.

Ned, like you, I have never been to Haiti.

Ned, I've never been. I have said I have never been and I have offered no unfounded opinion or hearsay.

On the Haitian matter, I have deep understanding and experience.

So when were you there, Ned? I would be fascinated to see your images.

Regards,

Bill

As one who has no first hand experience with Haiti... and who would not have the courage to go there on an unescorted trip for any reason... I was struck with this thread...

Bill, a quick google search for "Haiti street corpses" is a real eye opener... NB23 knows something.

On the other hand I also found a magnum photographer BRUCE GILDEN has done some amazing work in Haiti in 1995... before the real chaos.

There is an interview with him on the magnum site... and from a photographic perspective it might be an amazing venue... one that is likely to shake any westerner's perspective.

I have access to first-hand information from many Haitians around here. Many of which are extremely nice people. But forget me. There is youtube:

On Kidnapping:

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

... And so much more...

So to get back on the photography topic: As much as I love photojournalism, I do not recommend to anyone to go to Haiti these days.

To the OP: Do not necessarily listen to me or to anyone. Simply contact the Haitian embassy in Washington (Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Haiti) and get back to us.

Just waiting for your images of Haiti, Ned. Share whenever you are ready.

Bill

Bill, get off my back. Stop acting like a child. You always want but are never quite able to shaft me. But I must ask why the fixation? Is it Jealousy? Do you need photography classes? PM me and I'll give you my pricelist.

Regards

Ned

"If and when I choose to speak on a subject, it is because I know."

Yes, Ned, I can browse the internet too. I can go to a Nepalese restaurant and chat to the waiters there, but that does not give me first hand experience of Nepal.

The OP asked for first hand experience.

You have none, beyond what you have learned from your armchair. I think we understand that now. Thank you.

Bill, I live in Montreal. A place where there are more then 100 000 Haitians. I have friends and tenants that are from Haiti. I've had Haitian teachers in University giving economics and sociology classes. My best childhood friend is half haitian half canadian.I worked with haitians. I can read the language. I can understand Créole. Voudou is for real, right here in Montreal. So on.

The armchair loser is you :)

Now you're on my block list. Not because you're argumentative (Forums is about arguments), but because you are one extremely naive, ignorant man.

The loser here is you.

No doubt you can get yourself into trouble wherever you go, but you do have to temper stories about most countries you read in western press these days.

Thorn tree made some interesting reading, with those condmning the place quoting friends and aquaintences and those supporting having actually been there. Probably worth your while visiting and posting specific questions at ThornTree

Amonst other things posted by others at that forum;

"i was there just this summer, and felt very safe the places i went (PAP, cap haitien, hinche, labadie, ouanaminthe). i traveled with my boyfriend, using only public transportation, and we never felt unsafe. on the contrary, people were in general very kind and helpful, but mind their own business if you don't ask them for something. i think you will be just fine, and i hope you won't get scared off doing this trip because of advice from people who heard rumours, but never went themselves. enjoy! it is by far the most interesting country i ever visited, and i visited a few by now."

"I returned May 10 from a medical mission trip to Haiti. We were in a group of about 14 and mainly had translators. We had our own transportation and although we usually use tap-taps, we didn't this time. We only went out once at night........We worked in medical clinics in some of the poorest areas of the city and had no problems whatsoever during the day time. We encountered and witnessed no violenced, except what appeared to be a little shouting and pushing between two old men playing dominoes."

"i know two hatians where i live here in florida. neither would go back right now. so, i trust them. they've lived there and think it's too dangerous. i'd love to go too, but they tell me to wait until things are better."

People are too free with opinions on the internet.

Personally I would do some research and PM someone who has been there photographing for the past twenty years.

One doesn't need to eat poo to know it doesn't taste good. I don't need to experience it personally in order to recommend it or not to the rest of the world. Some others have to try it to believe it. Bill comes to mind :D

While I'm sure the guy who shot Haiti for 20 years has interesting things to say, I'm even MORE sure about what Haitians themselves, some of them personal friends, told me. What's so hard to understand?

I once wanted to go to Haiti instead of Cuba for a vacation. Many people, all of them who knew, made me understand that I'd probably never come back. Not even dead. Of course some people will say Haiti is the perfect place to be but the truth is, if you don't have friends or bodyguards over there, you'll be toast. At least in 2008 and for the next 2 years... at least.

Instead of Haiti, I'd go to Brazil (probably in a few years).
