I saw an article about Leica's business fortunes on Buzzle.com, which shows the article from Guardian Newspapers - a shareholder meeting has been called in response to a a reported full year los by Leica of E15,5m (Euros) loss. It's dated 8th July.

Here is the link: Leica Faces Extinction As Digitals Snap Up Business

The article certainly paints a bleak future for this beloved company and its products. Personally the article seems quite contrary to general industry "talk" in recent times. However, all will be revealed at the shareholder meeting according to the article. "Fingers crossed"!

This is a ludicrous, ridiculous post chasing a ludicrous, ridiculous article which refers to the state of the company in 2005, not 2008. Since then, Leica has been largely bought by Dr Kaufmann's investment vehicle, ACM.

It may be dated 8 July, it's the year they've got wrong. Just goes to show you don't want to believe what you read on the internet.

First of all, who are these 'shareholders' that the article refers to? And the article contains this gem,,,

"The company, which has replaced its chief executive, appears to be pinning its hopes on its pioneering digital camera, the digital module R, which allows photographers to use the same camera body for digital and film pictures"

Pinning it hopes on a camera it stoped manufacturing quite a while ago? Poor journalism.

Except the Chief Executive they are referring to is not SKL but Hans Peter-Cohn who was indeed kicked out and went on to run an Austrian furniture company if I recall. The PR person they refer to, Gero Furchheim has also moved on from Leica.

As more fuel to the buzzle.com fire of irresponsible reporting, here's a Retuers Plus screen showing Leica ADRs as of last night. Please note that the current quote is at the year's high (US$19)

I am constantly amazed and disappointed how quickly web surfers will believe and pass around inaccurate information without researching.

One simply has to go to Leica's web site and within a few clicks discover that fiscal "2007/2008 closed with 7.3% sales growth and group net income of [Euro] 3.0 million."

And if our attention span is any longer than 1/30 second (handheld, of course, at f/2), we might even be tempted to read the whole report.

Gosh, we're LEICA users! One could hope we'd have better critical thinking skills....

Never heard of Buzzle before - where did they drag this old story up from and why?

The internet is full of mis-information like this. People just take whatever is written as fact and rarely bother to try and substantiate it, which as Joe says its a matter of a few clicks of the mouse.
