Value: M2 with M6 viewfinder/rangefinder

Greetings all,

I am trying to determine a selling price for my 1963 M2 (self timer, lever rewind) with an M6 finder installed. The camera has one small ding and a tiny piece of the leatherette cover missing (in the area of one of the strap lugs). I had the speeds checked a year or so ago and they were right on - shooting with the camera has given consistently good results.

One question: does the M6 finder raise, lower, or have no effect on the value?

I am looking to sell this fairly quickly and will price it accordingly. My question - what to ask? All opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ken

Agree, a price around 500 Euros or a little more can be reached: not original but modified with original parts, and this doesn't knock down the value. btw, if times are good and the RF rather new (I suppose is so, being of M6 type), this is a camera to be used with pleasure.

Thanks for the quick answers. I was thinking around $700 USD which is a bit less than 500 Euros, so your comments were encouraging. It is a fine camera - unfortunately, times are not good at the moment, so it has to go along with a couple of CV lenses (35/2.5 and a 50/1.5 which has never been used). It breaks my heart, but it is either this or one of my guitars.

Thanks again!

Ken

Without seeing the actual condition, I would agree with the prices given for an M2, for a private sale. I would expect a dealer to charge more but also to offer a g'tee etc.

Personally I think the M6 finder could add value - it makes it a more unusual 'user' camera. But I've no idea how much of a premium it can add, maybe 100 euros?

Try a higher price and see what reaction you get! If you list it on e bay you'll get whatever someone is prepared to pay of course (subject to any reserve you may put on it).

Good luck. Parting with a Leica can't be easy :(

Seen from a purist's point of view the mod probably lowers the value of the camera, since it's no longer a genuine M2 any more, but some kind of a hybrid. Plus there is a saying amongst hardcore Leica afficionados that the viewfinder/rangefinder unit of the early modells (M3, M2, M4) had been superior to that of M4-2 onwards. It took Leica until the launch of the MP before they regained the former standart.

But a user usualy shouldn't mind about that. For him the camera is now a kind of M4-P with the additional benefit of a selftimer, which the M4-P in standart guise lacks. So I guess it would be a good idea to find out for which price M4-Ps usually sell in your country. Depending on it's appearance EUR 500,- to EUR 600,- could be a reasonable asking price IMHO.
