it should be about showcasing and showing how the camera can strut its stuff in capable hands ......this is sadly lacking here as most of the images are ordinary

This thread was a great idea - so why not call it a day? Discussions on picture quality etc. are beside the point.

We have 101 excellent reasons - that is enough.

We have 101 excellent reasons - that is enough.

Give Imants his due, '101 Reasons for having an M8', implies that the M8 can produce work that is different or better than other cameras (we know it can). The thread showed enthusiasm, but not enough differential between the options. Without being intentionally difficult here some images would have been equalled by many P&S boxes and therefore don't illustrate the massive advantages that this little box and its fabulous lens system can do.

So, why not start another thread "101 reasons for having an M8 .... rather than anything else" ? To be fair, 50 good reasons would be enough. Many of those posted here could be carried over.

True, but just because your very clever with Photoshop doesn't make it a better camera or you a better photographer.

If we all shot like Imants, life would be incredibly boring; it's the diversity that makes things interesting. So, Imants, and those like him, who explore the outer fringes, have a place, as do those who take pride in capturing a slice of life as it exists.

So, cheers to diversity.

My 2 euro cents;

I tend to agree.! But the good news is that it pushed some of the gloom and doom posts off the top of the list and gave us a chance to play...

I'll still be coming back for technical insights and answers to questions - but I'll probably go back to posting images on the photo forum...

True, though if you are working in the digital domain a certain knowledge of Photoshop, or an equivalent is necessary IMHO. This doesn't mean that you have to know the program inside out (does anyone?), but it can make the difference between a so so shot and an excellent one - just as a knowledge of darkroom technique can make a similar difference with film.

Agreed, but a photographer has to be able to produce, no matter how, a finished result called a photograph that is worthy of looking at. Otherwise, he's just interested in cameras and not a photographer.

I didn't think that was the intent here, but I'm getting the feeling that I was wrong. :D :D :D

edit: Just to clarify, I have no prejudice against people who want to collect cameras, or want to invest in cameras, or want to be involved in photography in the wider sense, or want to spend their hard earned money on nice things. Good for them. There's rewards from so many directions in this activity.

Hey I have never stated that one should shoot as I do,nor do I advocate that to the students young and old I teach. They are quite free to travel their own path and most have a great conviction in their craft and intent............ and it is the image that is more important than the camera. There is a heap more grace and honesty towards the images produced in the photo forum than here.........

Thanks, Chris for starting this thread. I enjoyed every reason.

I enjoy threads like this very much.

As far as quality of work goes, I go with simple rule, either I like it or I don't. No more to it. I don't care about photographs' technical merits.

Love to see more threads like this where we get to see a lot of photographs in context. I feel like world is comming to me because I get to see photographs from around the world without my going and looking for them.

The ability to see all the action and capture it instantly ...

To see an image, to capture it.. no big camera.. no sticky out lens... no cropping.. no photoshop... just photography.. and my way of seeing.

Probably I got the exposure wrong. As to the focus, I'm top 1% myopia. It's my fault that I can't be doing with all the buttons and thumbs. But I ain't shooting for an exhibition. And I'm happy.
