Black 35 Summicron 8 Element

We have had discussions about screw thread 35 Summicrons before, and as I said then I was working for the Leica dealer in Montreal in the late 60s, and the Leica rep told is that any Canadian made lens could be supplied to order in 39mm screw mount I cant recall if/how many we sold, but there must be some late (above 2 million) 8 element Summicron 35s around.

They were 'home produced' to, so my M3 version with goggles cost less than $10 more than a Summaron imported from Germany.

Gerry,

As the 35 V1 Summilux was made in Canada, does that mean that in theory, there could be some LTM versions hiding at the back of cupboards?

Yes Wilson, thats what I mean. My 35 Summicron for my M3 came from Midland via the Leica agent at a 'special price' for staff at shops. I can't remember what else Midland was making at that time.

Gerry,

I assume you did not get the chance to buy the legendary 66m/f2 Elcan-M  :)

I see these are fetching astronomical prices now.

I think Elcan stuff was 'hush-hush' in those days! I certainly knew nothing about it!

To be honest I didn't pay much attention to the screw thread options. I had 'moved on' from a IIf to the M3 (via Pentax in between) and nostalgia hadn't set in, I just wanted the'best' modern tool for the job of recording my travels etc.

FWIW I did sell my black chrome Summicron v1, then bought an as-new chrome Wetzlar one, a mint Rolleiwide, and paid off my Credit card with the remaining funds.

Felt like I was selling a black tulip to be honest. Michael's estimate was about right.

The chrome one is great, I love the lens, I won't sell this one unless it too becomes some prized jewel for the 1%.

If it does, I will finally get to see the Caribbean sea.
