yadillah Posted June 4, 2008 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am in a bit of a quandry at the moment. I am about to replace my notebook and can't decide whether or not to change frpm PC to Mac. My desktop is a PC and therefore my programs, ie. Capture, Photoshop etc are for PC. I know that Windows can be run on a Mac. My question is, is it worthwile making the change? The Mac has certain benefits, but are these negated by also running Windows programs. Are the newer PCs as good as Mac? I am sorry if this has been covered before, but I would appreciate some advice.
Advertisement Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Hi yadillah, Take a look here PC vs MAC. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mustafasoleiman Posted June 4, 2008 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2008 The Macs are better machines and much better operating system and they look better too... and they also run Windows if you miss it for any reason. They don't make really cheap boxes though... so, if you are looking for one of those, or you are keen to build yourself the ultimate box piece by piece... look elsewhere. A Mac is kinda like... a Leica I guess...

JHAG Posted June 5, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 5, 2008 May I add that Apple has always been pretty fair play commercially speaking, for the two times I had problems with a machine (9 machines in 14 years, 1 minor glitch, 1 major troubleshooting) : repair under warranty even though my Apple Care was off. pleeson Posted June 5, 2008 Share #5 Posted June 5, 2008 PC's are cheaper. Mac's are better. ;-) But if you are only going to be using Windows programs, buy a PC; I'd try to get XP and not Vista as the OS.
canlogic Posted June 5, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 5, 2008 I develop PC based database applications for a living and use a variety of high end Dell and HP pc's and notebooks. I own the company. For my own use I now use only Mac's and even now use Parallels to run Windows for my development aps. I have yet to own a high end Dell that I did not have hardware problems with and HP isn't much better. Yet to have any problem with the 2 iMacs and one notebook that I have purchased. Printmaker Posted June 5, 2008 Share #7 Posted June 5, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I run both. I have 4 Macs to do photos and art and 1 Dell XPS to count the beans. Nuf said. Tom
newyorkone Posted June 5, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 5, 2008 PC = Piece of Crap I just spent 5 hours troubleshooting my mother-in-law's piece of crap because it had a virus and loads of other Windows OS quirky goodies. I was considering spending the money and buying her a mac just so I don't have to deal with her PC ever again.
mmk60 Posted June 5, 2008 Share #9 Posted June 5, 2008 I use a PC at work (how nice!) and it crashes, freezes and even farts everyday. My colleagues believe that it is the device that sits between the PC and the chair. OK... Then I go home and I sit between my MBP and chair. Nothing happens! Applications crash even on my mac occasionally but beauty is that all I have to do is to reopen the applications. No need to restart the OS unlike the PC that I use at work. A couple of days ago, I gave my old Powerbook to a friend of mine who was hesitant to use a mac for some reason. She called me today screaming "OMG! I luv the mac!!".... cheers
mr_big Posted June 5, 2008 Share #10 Posted June 5, 2008 I work for a west coast ad agency and all the account/media/finance associates got brand new Dell desktops a few years ago. They're going to replace them all with iMacs running XP via Bootcamp. The bean counters decided that it's worth spending a bit more up front and not having to deal with the constant repairs. We on the creative end, however, have had Macs on our desks from the beginning.
Kittyphoto Posted June 5, 2008 Share #11 Posted June 5, 2008 One vote for Mac. Never have virus problem. No slow down. OSX is very stable too.
george + Posted June 5, 2008 Share #12 Posted June 5, 2008 Nice to see so many happy Mac users. Just for the record, I have been in the computing business since 1957. Have worked with equipment from many sources and was one of the very first to buy plug-compatible mainframes. So I am not stuck on mainline equipment. These days I build my own PC-s and would do so again. And I see no reason to change to Mac-s at this time. Some years ago the company I took over tried to use Apple products for commercial applications. The users loved much of the GUI but the effort was not a commercial success. Most personal computers are PC-s. They work well, if you know what you are doing. Which may be too much to ask these days. Not to mention that just too many software developers do not seem to know the most basic principles of good coding. That's a pity. And an incredible waste. As to Dell's, I never had any trouble with any of them. As to operating systems, I still use XP, it works fine for me. But I use Thunderbird and Firefox for e-mail and browser. To sum it up, I like the flexibility the PC architecture gives me and do not wish to give up my options. It is a big world, there is room for more than one philosophy. monza Posted June 5, 2008 Share #13 Posted June 5, 2008 Most PCs are basically the same, Intel motherboards are the same, even coming out of the same factory. Just different labels on them. So they are differentiated by price, and support. If you outfit a major brand PC similarly to what you get with a Mac, prices are comparable. But the price of the hardware is often the smallest part of the investment. How valuable is your time? PCs are support hassles unless you are an expert. Plus, how much is a used PC worth? How much is a used Mac worth? Even if the Apple *were* more expensive, resale is higher. And used no-name clones are worth the least. Apple support is excellent. Shootist Posted June 5, 2008 Share #14 Posted June 5, 2008 I have 3 PC desktops at home, one at work and 3 PC notebooks. 5 are dell's, 3 notebooks and 2 desktops, the other 2 desktops I built myself. All of them are running Win XP Pro. NONE of them crash or fart, None of them ever get infected with viruses. All of them except my newest desktop are at least 4 years old. The idea, and or concept, that a Mac is better then a PC is just BS (that stands for Bull Shit). In fact they use the exact same hardware. Try going to a Mac forum and reading a bit. Mac's have just as much problems, failures, as PC's do and there are a TON more PC's in the world. I willl never own a Mac because I like building my own, can't do that with a Mac, and I don't like spending more money for the same hardware. And I don't care for Steve Jobs. Oh by the way I won't be running Vista either.
offshore Posted June 5, 2008 Share #15 Posted June 5, 2008 I've used both and YOU will work for your PC, your MAC will work for you.
monza Posted June 5, 2008 Share #16 Posted June 5, 2008 The idea, and or concept, that a Mac is better then a PC is just BS (that stands for Bull Shit). Oh, and Mac OS X actually works, unlike Vista. So you get to use the most modern operating system, instead of 6 year old XP. But you can run 6 year old XP on your Mac, too, if you really need to. You do know there is a reason must computers in the world are Intel Windows boxes, both business and home use. The fact that more computers are Intel Windows is meaningless to me. I'd be shooting Canon if I thought installed base was the most important factor.
zlatkob Posted June 5, 2008 Share #19 Posted June 5, 2008 I put my thoughts on PC vs. Mac in a blog post here: Timesaving Macs. The bottom line is that Macs have been more reliable for me in day-to-day work.
vikasmg Posted June 5, 2008 Share #20 Posted June 5, 2008 While I have reservations on Vista, I'm a long teime PC user who recently witched to Macs. Macs do a lot of things right but not everything. I switched to Macs because they look way better and I like their displays and other hardware better. I used to use ThinkPads. If you type a lot you should get a ThinkPad - period. No keyboard for a Mac or other PC compares with it and even though I don't type all that much it's a major issue I have with Macs. The Mac OS is indeed stable but I found this isn't as much of an issue as I was told - specially compared to XP. There is also a lot more choice of software available for the PC, and to be honest some of it is better on a PC. MS Office and Outlook on a PC, after months of trying both, is significantly better than MS Office and Entourage on a Mac once you have used both for a while. However I would not feel safe on a PC without a good anti-virus and security program. I'm using Macs without any such thing without any trouble. However I think as Macs become more popular this will change. Design matters to me and although I think ThinkPads are reasonably good looking machines, no one seems to have the same grip on industrial design Apple does. Just compare the power adapters! Also I travel a lot an no one else has anything remotely as appealing as a MacBook Air. Yes I do carry a separae USB drive with the Air, but I find it stays mostly in my bag and I rarely use it except when backing up photographs. FWIW...
