Photographing in Morocco

I went in February - there are wonderful sights to take - the Medina and Square in Marrakech is full of character - and colours - but be very courteous taking moroccans - being muslim they do not necessarily appreciate their photo being taken - so wide non specific shots are OK. I would ask first before taking any individuals photo.!

There are exceptional sights in the Atlas mountains a couple of hours from Marrakech.

I actually have experienced that in other muslim countries, but was somehow hoping that Morocco was different. Thought that it only applied to very religious areas, but I guess that was hopeful thinking... Thanks for the feedback!

O.K. The Geni is out of the bottle! Just think about me and I appear.:D

Msole, rather than bore the Forum with my prattle about Morocco, I will PM you later in the day with my version of how wonderful Morocco is and how I (attempt) to photograph locals without causing offense to anyone. When do you plan on going? I will be there in October.

Lucky you, I wanted to go there but incapable agencies here have no offer. And for going individually I must have visa and for getting visa, because here is no embassy of Morocco I must to go to nearest EU country, and for that I must get visa too, so I must get visa to get visa :) Same when wanted to go to Jordan :)

And foolish me hoped to visit Kambodia :)

No wonder my signature is like you see it :)

I've been to Morocco several times (Tanger, Fez, Essaouira, Agadir, Marrakesh), no problem photographing people if you are not too "intrusive", carry the camera open so your intentions are noted (and you will be best prepared to take those "decisive moment" pictures). You will experience that some people don't like having their picture taken, respect that. If you ask first, be prepared to give some money. And it will always help if you speak some French (even better if you have some words in Arabic). In general terms, Morocco is far more western oriented than most other muslim countries, I find it very easy and comfortable to be there.

Some time I'll get a decent scanner and post some of my pictures here....

Lars, I agree with much of what you say, especially the ease and comfort, with some exceptions, which depends on how one travels.

As far as techniques for photographing people, I feel it depends heavily on the 'style' of image you are looking to capture and the context it is in. I tend to avoid the bland staring at the camera style that is so common, which is obviously induced by agreement with the subject and symptomatic of 'family snaps'. My preference is to capture people engaged in their daily pursuits without drawing attention to myself. Ultimately, they may become aware of me, I then will often engage them in conversation and try to win their confidence to allow me to continue, but do not press the point. Mostly, the first few frames are the 'treasures' because of the total lack of self conciousness by the subject.

In my experience, Moroccans are amongst the 'toughest' people to photograph in this style but also the most rewarding when it works.

P.S. Your avatar from Essaouira make me feel very nostalgic.

Mostly they don't appreciate tourists taking their picture. If you ask nicely & use local "please" & "thank you" you have a better chance. Move slow. Don't make any sudden moves. You will almost certainly be asked for money.
