Advertisement Posted September 17, 2006 Posted September 17, 2006 Hi albertwang, Take a look here If you could have just 1 camera and 1 lens, what would they be?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sean_reid Posted September 18, 2006 Share #42 Posted September 18, 2006 Sean, I guess when one wants Exp. Comp. on the M8, it might be fastest to switch to Manual. Thanks, Mitchell Yup, I agree. Manual is often better than EV comp anyway. Cheers, Sean
sean_reid Posted September 18, 2006 Share #43 Posted September 18, 2006 I was an RF virgin until I purchased the Epson. At the time finances were tight so I purchased a very aged 35/3.5 Summaron and a CV50/1.5. I have since purchased a second hand 4th gen 35 Summicron but there is little chance that I would sell the Summaron. First it isn't really worth selling and secondly it produces interesting (and soft) lenses which are perfect for some instances. Its also tiny and beautifull built. Exactly. First of all, less expensive lenses can be a great way to get started. Second, one may *prefer* the look created by certain lenses that aren't very expensive. Needless to say, this has been a thrust in my lens reviews for a long time now. There is no such thing as a best lens. The photographer needs to know how he wants the camera to draw and then choose accordingly. And if he or she has to choose according to his wallet, that's fine too. sean_reid Posted September 18, 2006 Share #44 Posted September 18, 2006 I'll be re-doing lens tests of various focal lengths on the M8 (21, 24/25, 28, 35 and 50 at least). The following are just my hunches (based on testing lenses with the R-D1) and have not been backed up with testing yet, but my instincts say: 21: Both the Zeiss and Leica will do well on the M8, CV 21/4 will not do nearly as well 24: Leica 24 will be great, Zeiss 25 will be excellent as well if someone can modify the lens to bring up the 24 mm frame lines, CV 25/4 will not do nearly as well 28: CV 28/1.9 (but not the 28/3.5), Zeiss 28/2.8, Leica 28/2.0 and 28/2.8 will all be good options 35: CV 35/2.5, Zeiss 35/2.0, Leica 35/1.4 and 35/2.0 will all do well 50: CV 50/1.5, Zeiss 50/2.0, Leica 50/2.0 and Leica 50/1.4 will all do well Again, my best guesses only. Don't hold me to these until I actually test them on the M8...but I think the results may be close to this list. Cheers, Sean
mwilliamsphotography Posted September 18, 2006 Share #45 Posted September 18, 2006 Hasselblad H2D/39 and 100/2.2 HC lens. I make more money with that set-up then any other camera/lens combo. For me personally? MP3 and 50/1.4 ASPH. Gun to my head ... for weddings ... Canon 1DsMKII and 24-105/4 L ... not because I like it, but because it'll do everything if you had to ... which would make me quit weddings if I had to use only that combo. leicapfile Posted September 18, 2006 Share #46 Posted September 18, 2006 Sean, Will you be testing the M8 with coded lenses only, or non-coded? For that matter, with both where you have both? Thanks, Jerry
hamey Posted September 18, 2006 Share #47 Posted September 18, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) It depands on lighting. Winter = M7 & 35mm f2 ASPH. Summer = it's the R9 & 28-90mm vario. matt736 Posted September 18, 2006 Share #55 Posted September 18, 2006 For Digital Epson R-D1 + 28 f2 summicron, a killer combination as already mentioned. For Film Leica MP 0.72 + 35 f2 asph summicron ,with Fuji Provia 100f is just fantastic. I must just say that after using the R-D1 for two years I went back to shooting film this year and even though I have put a deposit on an M8 I will still continue to use film along side digital because I believe that film is best for now,but I am hoping that when i see the images produced by the M8 I will know Leica made the right decision in producing the M8,just my thoughts, Cheers Matthew. gogopix Posted September 19, 2006 Share #56 Posted September 19, 2006 Very few R9/DMR votes did everyone forget the 35-70 2.8? Pretty useful. For wider, just rotate and do a pano! Victor
jrgeoffrion Posted September 19, 2006 Share #57 Posted September 19, 2006 As we all ponder the acquisition of yet another camera (in my case the M8) to our already sufficient collection, I wonder what the expert forum would pick if they could only own 1 camera and 1 lens (including cameras no longer owned). As I reflect on my humble history including a Ricoh Singlex TLS (sold), Nikon F3 (sold), and now a Leica M6 (with Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4) and Leica D-Lux 2, I would have to pick (I'm somewhat embarrassed to say) the D-Lux 2 given its digital ability with immediate gratification & total processing control, Leica glass, ease of portability, built-in flash, zoom lens, & uncanny results. Thus I wonder if I should pursue the M8. M8 with 28-35-50 tri-elmar.

regista Posted September 20, 2006 Share #60 Posted September 20, 2006 Hate to be a conscientious objector, but one lens only on the camera of my choice- which as of late has been the M8- would be catastrophically unfair. Castrating! At least a two lens choice would make for a much more reasonable census (at least one I could live with). After all, most cameras which would fall on everyone's short list here have been designed to interchange lenses. To treat any of them as a one lens camera is plainly ridiculous. My honest opinion....
