I recently purchaced a DMC-L1 (was going for the digilux but ended up getting a very very good deal)... Anyways its my first SLR and I have a lot to learn. What in everyone's opinons are the first accessories I should invest in. Camera bag will probably be one of the first (can anyone suggest a good sling-type bag) or thoughts on the leica neoprene case? After that what should I start to look for - UV filter? tripod? etc?

Any help is appreciated!

I have the Leica neoprene case and it is a perfect fit.

It is also perfectly priced on the high end.

I also have a Zing neoprene case that fits very well.

It would be best to take the camera to a shop that has a selection of bags and try a few out.

If you want a real nice accessory take a look at the Olympus 90-250 zoom lens.

The L1 hangs off the back of it very nicely.

A filter is a good start - even if only to protect the lens! Make sure you have the latest firmware installed. Spare battery is useful? Cases are a very individual thing - try out quite a few before you finally choose. Good luck!

I carry my Digilux 3 with the kit lens or the new 14-150 zoom, plus the 25mm prime lens, a spare battery, and a few SD cards, in a Crumpler "four million dollar home" bag. There's a small additional pocket that can hold a wallet, an iPod or a cell phone. It all fits perfectly.

I keep MC protector filters on all my lenses as a matter of course, because I'm a klutz and filters are so much cheaper to replace than the lenses themselves.

So far, that's all I've got.

I have two cases:

a) the Leica Neoprene, which is quite thin, and offers minimal protection, and useful whilst carrying the camera on one's shoulder inside a coat in cold-climates or thief territory. It is convenient to access the camera quickly.

B) the Crumpler Zieube, is a better padded, and more water resistant case than the Neoprene. Though slightly bigger than the Neoprene. This one is more suitable for travelling around for a few days and can hold 2 batteries. It is difficult to purchase now, as it's not common, but is 1/3 the price of the Leica Neoprene case. It is a perfect fit for an L1/D3.

It took me about 1 year to find one off ebay and Amazon, can be bought for $20.

This is my second Crumpler, who make probably the most useful range of camera and messenger bags see <www.crumpler.com.au> and of cousre another great Aussie product...

I also have a Crumpler Cucumberumba, which will take a D3/L1 with 14-50 lens plus 25mm. (Its just a longer version of the Zieube.). Got this one off ebay for $22.

The nice thing about Crumpler cases, is that they don't scream "Camera-camera, thieves queue here"

"filter...?"did I hear someone say..... I thought the great Leica tradition is to boldly go where most other photographers dare not go......with no filter............

First accessories? a few spare cards and batteries for sure, and maybe a small bag to keep it all along with the charger when traveling. Anything else is to be bought just when you feel you really need it.

Just my 2 (euro)cent of course.
