mat_mcdermott Posted May 20, 2008 Share #21 Posted May 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Older Leicas were/are very discrete. The logo is engraved into the top plate. The M8 has the red dot and an out of proportion white "M8" on the front. Very tacky, in my opinion. Might as well put keep a large price tag on the camera as it serves the same purpose. I agree. I much prefer the MP look.
Advertisement Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Hi mat_mcdermott, Take a look here M8's fashion week.. (a small poll...). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mat_mcdermott Posted May 20, 2008 Share #22 Posted May 20, 2008 I always wondered this too, until I heard a painter in Montmarte (Paris) cryin' at me, while looking at my camera, sayin' that if I wanted to take a picture of him I should have given him some money... You should've asked him if he was willing to pay the owner of the building he was (probably) painting... I suspect his outcry had little to do with Leica. The same monetary figure would've be cited if the camera was Nikon, Canon or anything more than a Holga.

Amoment Posted May 21, 2008 Share #24 Posted May 21, 2008 Reality check: 99.999833333 % of the world population do not know what a Leica is and in fact do not even want to know. So why cover the logo? I was on a short holiday last week and none of my friends knew what it was & thought it was some old contraption. Same last sunday visying friends - most people thought I was shooting film. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics." We can only speak from our experiences, and possibly Leica's advertising and public awareness is greater in the UK. You also have to be aware of people who see your property as a means to their own ends, when you are photographing in 'difficult' areas. Stuart PS I never had the problem with my M3
Perspectics Posted May 21, 2008 Share #25 Posted May 21, 2008 Let's say... a dinner party?Or a cocktail lounge... Silver then. Silver M8, silver 35cron asph with hood. If I had a silver lux, I`d sure vote for that. Plenty of glass is shiny and beautiful.

markgay Posted May 21, 2008 Share #28 Posted May 21, 2008 In Moscow absolutely everyone thinks my M8 is an old Soviet camera... It screams "dad's old Fed". No one can believe it's digital, let alone expensive. As for fashion.. "discrete elegance" demands the 50mm summicron - but that looks even more balanced on the M7. "Lush opulence" is the Noctilux at f/1, a shimmering black pool of smooth glass and the diaphragm open so wide you can't even see the aperture leaves.. deep throat.. a bacchanalian revel... brill64 Posted May 21, 2008 Share #30 Posted May 21, 2008 Its been pretty slow on the from recently so sporting views of best dressed is as good as anything else I suppose. More on point, I don’t much care for the red Leica logo although not because I’m concerned with getting mugged. In fact, I’m still looking for one of that titanium logo’s that really looks great on the silver body like this one originally posted by another member. In any event, this is all in good fun. Besides, who in their right mind would not find this baby very attractive!Regards, Daniel, i'd say that silver babe's yearning for a black A&A neck chord... Philinflash Posted May 22, 2008 Share #35 Posted May 22, 2008 My M8 always wears a lens cap when its 35 ASPH Cron is fitted, albeit somewhat modified. The reason for this to manage the light available to the lens. As we all know, any M-mount lens is engineered to process light through to a 24x36 mm receptor patch (film) whereas the M8 has a significantly smaller sensor (for now, anyway). Therefore, it stands to reason that more light is getting into the innards of the M8 than is absolutely necessary. It might even be counter-productive, producing flare under some circumstances. My 50-year-old Rolleiflex D has a kit that allows you to run 35mm film through it. Amongst the bits, is a mask that clips onto the standard lens hood that was my inspiration for this modification. BTW, the cap is glued down to the lens hood (otherwise it would be too easily lost) and I have another hood and unmodified cover for when the lens is not in use. You might notice that the "M8" and Red Dot are taped out, like a few others. I have read all the back and forths on the subject of how many potential crooks recognize the camera for what it is but all I know is that I feel better (more secure) with the tape on it rather than not. And, finally, there is the omnipresent Cameragoodies Sling which I love. Welcome, dear visitor!
