michali Posted May 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) M8, VISOFLEX3 & Leitz Telyt 280mm f4.8 On my canoe trip last week I encountered a number of hippos on the river in a variety of moods, some relaxed others not so relaxed. The problem is that you can never really gauge what they're going to do, the best thing is to immediately head towards the shore when you come accross these guys. Hippos kill more people in Africa than does any other animal. They can be extremely aggressive and very protective over their patch of water Thanks for viewing, MIKE

stuny Posted May 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 18, 2008 Mike - I suspect that you have one of the best jobs in the world, and your photos are marvelous. Terrific series of these dangerous leviathons, and the seeming peacefulness of #1 is as frightening as the first time we see Hannibal Lechter in Silence of the Lambs. Martin T-M Posted May 18, 2008 Share #3 Posted May 18, 2008 Mike, terrific series. I've never seen a hippo's picture from this angle of view. I like these three shots very much.

michali Posted May 19, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted May 19, 2008 Martin, SF, Ben & JC- Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment and for your compliments. Stuart- Thank you. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to spend the time I do in the bush, and I never take it for granted. Peter- Thank you. I wouldn't call myself brave, possibly stupid. The reality is that one must never get complacent and never push the boundaries.
