I left school at the age of 18 in 1974 and was taught no English grammar in my 7 years there - oddly enough it was a grammar school (and a great ad for comprehensive education too). Other's experience may be different. And despite the somewhat dodgy language I still think grammar is more important than vocabulary. Learning vocab is (relatively) easy. Learning grammar is hard.
