earleygallery Posted September 15, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Andy Piper says its for viewfinder illumination levels, others say white balance and yet others think its an led for the self timer. Surely the truth is out there? ?
Advertisement Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Hi earleygallery, Take a look here Blue dot - is the truth out there?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted September 15, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 15, 2006 First off, I was prepared to believe it was just for viewfinder display brightness but I can't see the logic of moving from the location in the M7, unless of course it doesn't work properly. I'd like to think it's a sensor for colour temperature to set the white balance. People who shoot raw exclusively like to say they don't worry about camera white balance because they sort it out in post-processing, but you have to have some starting point for WB and the more accurate it is, the better. Truth is, we do not know, but it seems overkill to have done this just to set the LED brightness in the viewfinder.
pascal_meheut Posted September 15, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 15, 2006 I do agree, this would be overkill especially because one can use the lightmeter to do so: my 1981 Canon A1 worked perfectly this way.
Rona!d Posted September 16, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 16, 2006 It is to read the surrounding light for the dim of the viewfinder illumination brightness. The selftimer-LED flashes on the front of the viewfinder itself (under the glass). Whitebalance is measured like in every other digital.
