Interesting quote about the Digilux 3

They specifically mention it as the "Basic model of the Leica D System" when it is currently the only model. The "Leica D System" does not refer to their digital cameras in general. Their website is quite specific as to where each camera model fits. The M8 is part of the M System. The Digital-Modul-R is part of the R System. The other digitals are under the Compact Cameras category. To me this indicates they will be introducing a higher end Digilux model in the future to compliment the Digilux 3. Maybe it will be similar to the Digilux 3 but have a 10mp 4/3 sensor and prism instead of mirrors.

I believe what we are seeing is the emergence of a "D system range" of bodies and lenses to protect the buyer's investment in 4/3 D lenses.

Just like anyone who bought M or R lenses, knew that as the M3,4 ,5,6,7,8 and R5, 6, 7, 8, 9

respectively would protect their glass investments as the bodies evolved.

So one would expect in a couple years a D4 to replace the D3 and ....and later a D5 to replace the D4 etc...

According to LFI (6/2006) Leica sees this as a more reasonably priced system "for beginners".. Rather than compromising quality and manifacturing stds in the M and R lines they chose 4thirds as the path to new markes. Actually a sound decision.

That's what I was thinking except maybe the Digilux 4 would be sold side by side with the Digilux 3 rather than replacing it just as the M7 and MP fill different needs. Maybe the Digilux 4 would have a 10mp sensor and a prism instead of mirrors but lack liveview on the LCD.

Well, now that they are done with the Digital M (M8) it's time the started working on a Digital CM to compete with the Ricoh GR-D. Give us a small P&S with a fixed prime lens like the CM only digital.
