J Mitchum Posted September 14, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2006 There is more : Leica D-LUX 3: Digital Photography Review What an outstanding strike from Leica. Such an amount of work… You realize these are just rebadged Panasonics or were you being sarcastic?
JHAG Posted September 14, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted September 14, 2006 Are you being sarcastic or as we say in french : "ronchon" ? ;-) See SR : "Leica and Panasonic have worked together on the design of many cameras and people often wonder just what the differences between the Panasonic and Leica version of a given camera are. Leica reports that the D-Lux 3 has it's own unique profiles with respect to "color matching, contrast and picture definition". My review of the D-Lux 2 is available in the subscriber section of the site and I will be reviewing the D-Lux 3 later this fall. The Leica Digilux 3 Leica's Digilux 2, which I reviewed for Luminous-Landscape in early 2004, is, in my mind, one of the best small sensor cameras ever made. It uses a 2/3" sensor and has the best file quality I've ever seen from a camera in that format. (…) Though the Digilux 3 shares a common platform with the Panasonic DMC L1, that does mean that the two cameras are identical and so comments that have been made so far in reviews of the L1 may or may not apply to the Digilux 3." I think Leica did a great work indeed and I feel many will feel the same when they'll get those pieces in their hands.
Overgaard Posted September 14, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2006 It is nice that Leica now is out in the open about the actual differences which we have been discussing since the Digilix 1. As for 'rebadging' that is not the case. It is a cooperation and as usual, Leica come out with their slighly different software (picture manipulation) as well as a nicer design. The story so far has told us that the 15% - 25% you pay extra for the Leica you get plenty again when selling it secondhand. Panasonics simply drop to the buttom with most other secondhand digital cameras, whereas Leica's stay in another range (Digilux 1 is being sold here in Denmark for 2/5 of new price second-hand these days. Digilux 2 for 1/2 - 2/3 of new price. As a comparison secondhand film Leicas cost 1/4 - 2/5 new price and the new Epson RD1 at 3/5 of new price). Anyway, will be interesting to learn more about the Digilux 3.
mobeyone Posted September 14, 2006 Share #5 Posted September 14, 2006 The specs are almost identical to the Dlux2 other than it being 10MP - is there any other change other than aesthetic?
J Mitchum Posted September 14, 2006 Share #6 Posted September 14, 2006 In the past they have made very minor changes to the Low/Med/High settings for contrast, sharpness, etc. It looks like they have done a bit more work this time around, at least on the D-Lux 3. The problem is that Panasonic image sensors are very noisy. They are really quite awful and I say this owning an LC1. There is only so much you can do with processing to overcome this. I look forward to some direct comparisons between the D-Lux and LX2. Does anyone know if a better warranty is still one of the benefits of paying more for the Leica version?
