Expect a flood of used Epson R-D1s on the market.

Well, it looks like the Epson R-D1s will be flooding the market soon as the owners replace it with the superior M8. Looks like Leica has delivered something that Epson hasn't been able to to do. Clean lines, minimalist approach has proven to be a winner over analog dials and fancy Japanese electronics.

I think that R-D1s used just dropped to less than $1500 starting this week. Oh well...

On the other hand, if Zeiss pulls the cards for an Ikon Digital I can't wait to see that too.

Sorry but how is it proven to be a winner?

I'm not against the M8 and hope to own one within a year or so (sooner if I used the R-D1 to finance it), but I think its early days to assume that the R-D1 is now seen as redundant and over complex. Sure, in some ways the minimal M8 appeals to me more but the dials of the R-D1 are no bad thing.

Just read Sean Reids review part 1 and he certainly doesn't now see the R-D1 as obsolete.

The R-D1 looks more ergonomic for sure and with its flippable LCD one can forget that disturbing piece of glass and its associated buttons to shoot really 'a la Leica'.

Also the R-D1 can be hold firmly in one hand thanks to its shutter lever and its 1:1 viewfinder is a must for those who like shooting both eyes open.

Setting aside its short RF base and poor quality control, the R-D1 is finally a digital M3 sort of where the M8 looks more like a digital M7.

Good analogy. I agree.

Certainly, there will be some R-D1's dumped in favor of the M8. Not sure if it'll be a flood. $1500 for a used R-D1 this year is not unlikely.

Yes, as I said in the article, the arrival of the M8 does not make the R-D1 obsolete. The biggest issue for the Epson is getting the QC under control. The design is of the R-D1 is excellent (better than the M8 in some respects) but I still have an R-D1 body in the exchange process right now. That's the big issue. Leica is really behind the M8 and I would be surprised if they didn't support it exceptionally well.

Cheers,

Sean
