Would you still buy a DMR?

Given the situation surrounding R System' future is, in my opinion, still uncertain, since it is understandable that the Leica AG would stop production of current R, i.e., R9, for the film use. And many of R enthusiasts are longing for the R10 to be announced at Photokina 2008, hopefully. It is very difficult to suggest whether buying DMR at this time of moment is a good choice.

However, as I have been using DMR since its first dispatch, I never regret of its result even compared with Nikon D3 at day time.

The only one point, I would like to raise is a focusing screen which is fair but not superb.

Hallo, you could try Brightscreen Flash Detection and you will get a more contrasty and brighter screen than the Leica screens. I'm happy with my DMR although the Leica support is a tragic performance. Regards Willem

Actually, having used the Brightscreen screen, I prefer the Leica microprism screen (which is not the standard DMR screen either).

I second that Jamie. At Robert Stevens suggestion, I just switched to the Leica microprism screen and I like it better than the Brightscreen (which was better than the DMR standard screen).

- dritz - The DMR is wonderful! If I get an R10 or SL10 :) I plan to keep the DMR as well. The files look good with very little post processing but when you want to work them up quite a bit they can handle it well.

That's why it's a joy to use.

I shot 99 shots (2 gig) this morning at one of our developments. Every one is useable, with minimal LR work. None have seen PS this evening at all.

I love my M7 and my M2, and my R4 for that matter...

But I also love my DMR. It will be with me a very long time.

dritz,

I meant to include this link in my response - it may be of some help in considering your decision . . . more fun with the DMR - Photo.net Leica and Rangefinders Forum

Hmmm. That thread reminded me why I never read threads on P-net...

Anyway to respond to the original question - yes I would. Actually I did a few months ago. Right decision too. :)

I must add my name to the growing list of DMR fans. There is nothing on the market yet that will tempt me away from my R9/DMR and beautiful R lenses! My advice too would be to go for it if you manage to see a good DMR advertised.

Maybe it should be renamed Ego.net.

When I first started getting back into photography in the late 90s it was a great resource. Now I only go there when I want a laugh.

Yes. I have used my R4s system for over 18 years and recently bought an R9/DMR since I had the lenses. It is wonderful, the only regret I have is that I do not use it enough now that I am not a working photographer. It is large and heavy, but not compared to a 4x5 setup and tripod!

We should encourage Leica to continue the compatability of the R system. I don't miss auto focus when I am doing serious shooting. These cameras are not child-chasers.

What RAW programs can someone recommend?

Lightroom is probably the best integrated and easiest to use, followed by Capture One V4, and then Flexcolor by Hasselblad/Imacon. As for the quality of the images out of the raw converters, you can reverse the order, with Flexcolor having the best color and best high ISO, then Capture One and finally Lightroom.

I am using it and will continue to use til leica comes up with something better in a slr format.

today I am printing beautiful 13x19 prints from it. I think dmrs will be used for years to come.. so I'd say if you know of a used one, get it.. I will most likely keep mine when the new camera is out.. I kept a r8 to back up my r9 but have sold it now, never even used it, the r9 being so dependable.

I'm hoping prices will drop once the R10 is released, and I may well pick one up if that happens.

I'm with you Steve, but, if the R10 is not announced or is way off, DMRs could jump in price. Prices are still fairly solid on eBay.
