hello hannes

the citroen van in your photo looks like one we had in paris in the late 1960s. we used it as a camper.

i don't have the details any more, but here are some possible reference points for you in your search:

  • its nickname was "panier a salades" = salad basket. it may also be called a "type H" or "fourgon police"
  • it was used as a delivery van by almost all trades. even the police used it to transport themselves or criminals
  • front wheel drive, 3 speed manual gearbox

a Google search under "panier a salade citroen" produced a great deal of information.

thanks for the memory!

greetings from hamburg

Hello Hannes,

« Panier à salade » is just the nickname for a “prison van”, referring to a “salad washer” because of the grids these vans had in older times. Panier à salade as a van is used only in that context.

Otherwise this very popular Citroën van was familiarly called “Tub Citroën”, referring to the tube-like aspect of its body made of corrugated steel.

I have driven some in the past, like that day when we moved in 1977 (it’s not me on the picture, but a friend who helped us).

Cheers,

Max
